Hardy Heron is the code name for Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Announcement, CNet Article). LTS stands for Long-Term Support: which means supported with security updates for five years on the server and three years on the desktop. Hardy Heron goes out in 2 days and GlassFish v2 is part of the release - check out the GF Package Entry, the Release Schedule, and, for the impatient and brave souls, the Release Candidate. |
This is interesting news as we are both using Ubuntu for our Linux based servers and are in the process of migrating our platform to glassfish. Two questions, in my opinion, are left however:
- Given that the packages are in hardy, does that mean that there also will be official Sun support for Glassfish on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS?
- Generally, I see both NetBeans and glassfish making its way into the Ubuntu repositories, which, on one side, is rather good as it eases adoption for those using Ubuntu and wanting to go with packages from the repository. On the other side: Is there a real technical reason to prefer Ubuntu repo packages to "vanilla" glassfish.dev.java.net downloads? Installing the platform-independent version of glassfish on Ubuntu is not that difficult at all, I don't really _need_ to install this using apt...
