GlassFish v2 is now out and I think there are good indications that this will be a successful and influential release. So, how did we get here? Rich has written a nice Historical Recap going through NetDynamics, KivaSoft, Netscape, iPlanet, Forte SynerJ, SunOne, Sun Java System Application Server, and then, GlassFish. He captured it all in this picture. The list is overwhelming; it almost sounds like a nightmare, but with a good ending... I hope. |
There is a second part to the history of GlassFish: that one goes through the JavaSoft branch, including things like the BeanBox, Tomcat, JWSDP, the Java EE SDK, etc. I'll try to find time to do a slide on it sometime "soon"...
Good point - I did miss a fair amount of detail - the picture implies J2EE 1.2 SDK appeared immediately as a whole product - there were many technology projects that preceded it. If you add in JWSDP - then we'll have to add some other vendor's products in as well, ditto JSP, JSF. It would be an interesting picture to demonstrate who Sun's technology has influenced many products and projects way beyond Sun's.

Forte SynerJ gave us the initial EJB CMP story for AS 7. Also, a lot of the good UI concepts got transfered to NetBeans J2EE support at that time...
So the read X is a bit too fast:)
