In-Memory Replication in GlassFish V2

The User Experience Meetings are continuing and our next one is tomorrow Wed, Nov 08, 2006 (PT). Presenter is Larry, on In-Memory Replication.

In-Memory replication is used to provide persistence for HTTP Sessions and Stateful (EJB) Session Beans. The high availability HADB mechanism will still be available but for most cases this will be an overkill. Details on how to attend at the UE Wiki Page.

Is the HADB the same as Clustra? How does it compare to Coherence*Web? (see link)

Yes, HADB is the old clustra. Sorry, I don't know enough about Coherence*Web to do comparisons. Larry White would be the guy to talk to; you can find him at the DEV@GF.dev.java.net mailing list. I am encouraging Larry to post his slides. Actually, what I want is to start a public series of technical sessions around these technologies. Will have to wait until when we hit the beta HCF but maybe after that. I used to chair a similar program inside Sun and I think it is time to do it outside / world-wide. - eduard/o

Eduardo, I understand the reason why you would not want to divulge the functionality of Clustra on one hand, but on the other, it seems to create two types of apps. HADB seems like it would be pretty different than a new fail-over mechanism to be used in Glassfish. From a business standpoint, you could argue that Clustra would be a good alternative to some databases like Derby and SleepyCat. From a technical perspective, wouldn't you want Sun app server customers to be developing apps that take advantage of the HADB element. Its kind of like learning to develop for Niagara. To me, it seems that the Glassfish team is choosing to be an industry standard app server, over being a competitive app server. I don't know enough, but please enlighten us on the decision not to open source Clustra. BTW, keep on....

Clustra is a very sophisticated tool. It is a good solution if you need the 5 9's availability it delivers, but it is an overkill otherwise. We truly believe that most customers will be much better off with the in-memory replication. The decision not to open source Clustra is just a cost/benefit analysis. Open Sourcing something is a lot of work and it is not worth it if the number of interested people is very small. - eduard/o
