IPS (yes, _that_ IPS) and GlassFish

IPS Prototype

We have reported on the GlassFish UpdateCenter but the team has also been working on the next version, using IPS from OpenSolaris to gain technical advantages and also significantly align efforts.

There is now a prototype of UC v2 that is capable of installing GF v2, Message Queue (OpenMQ), JavaDB (Apache Derby) and Ant packaged using IPS. For details check the Wiki page; don't miss the ScreenCast.

I'll keep you posted on developments and on the tentative schedule when we have one.

Comments:

But wouldn't that tie Glassfish in with an update mechanism tied down with native code, in effect reducing the portability of Glassfish to other platforms? I don't think that this is a very positive development, Glassfish will need the biggest posssible community to thrive.

Eventhough the app server itself might be totally portable, the surrounding support systems is also a part of what organizations must evaluate and make a selection on.

I probably should expand on the details (or, better yet, ask the people actualy working on this to do it). IPS is two things: the format and the client. The format is totally portable. The client is too, except that is written in Python, so its portability depends on the existance of a Python implementation. Not my ideal arrangement - although Jython might help - but Python is relatively portable, so that might be OK. In particular, all our supported platforms.

Does that help?

Better than I hasted to believe for sure. Though of course something with the same runtime as the app server would be prefferable as you say. Python seems like an odd choice.

I had actually looked on the IPS-page but missed the Python-part, and interpreted it as native.
