(NOT) Introducting Project WombatFish...
  Posted by pelegri in General

Wombat in the snow

Short: there is no project named WombatFish; help us choose a good name...

Long: We have started to work on our next two releases of Project GlassFish (more details later). The first one is called Project GlassFish (duh!), but the second needs a name and during a couple of presentations yesterday I used WombatFish in the slides, but only as a placeholder name. So, no WombatFish :-)

But we do need your help in choosing the name, so, start thinking... The guidelines are simple: the name should not conflict with existing projects, and we want a sea creature to build on the recognition for GlassFish. Send us names to theaquarium@sun.com or post them as comments here. When we have a good set of names we will ask the community at large to vote.

And, you ask, why WombatFish? Well, Wombats are interesting animals but they also have some history as jargon, particularly this and this. Locally, we have used Wombat in the past in several projects, from as way back as JavaBeans and JSP and many other places.

Comments:

Eduardo, WombatFish is such a wonderful name I think you should stick with it!
regards - Graham

What about GlassWombat?

What about Swordfish - or XiphiasGladius (well you didn't ask for a name easy to spell ;-))

I want to add Minnow to the list of options as it already has some association with making the AppServer *very* lightweight. - eduard/o

What about GoldFish?

How about Starfish, if it's not already taken? It's small and beatiful.

I think we should keep the name GlassFish. It's a cool name and the community likes it. Why change it?

Re: StarFish... -- I like that one. StarFish are quite unique (StarfishScience, Wikipedia): they have radial symmetry, they regenerate, they are highly redundant... Most of them are not very fast, but some are :-)

What about Flyingfish?

I don't understand why we need a new name for doing next major version? Does it mean, we will direct users to go to a new web site as opposed to http://GlassFish.dev.java.net? There is already a community around GlassFish. Why change the name? Does all open source project go thru name changes for every major release? regards, Sahoo

Hi Sahoo!

There is no ideal solution. The pre-JavaOne arrangement was a bit confusing and it was going to get more confusing with the addition of releases and products and components. We also had the opportunity of using OpenJava for the community name, and linking it to the SE side when the "how" gets resolved. And we are planning major architectural changes for the post GF v2 release... Doing the name rearrangement now seemed best.

We need to flesh out the details, but we will all be very careful with the transition, and we don't want to do it again :-)

Eduardo, Will there be a time to be able to "do it again"? Sorry to say this, but I can't believe that we are concentrating on the name change to this extent. Can we not convince the people who are making us change the name to let go this one time? Kedar
