OpenESB - (New) Beginnings...
  Posted by pelegri in OpenESB

OpenESB was launched at J1'05 - same as GlassFish - (PR@Sun, msg@JN) but OpenESB has gone through several phases since then. The last year has been of internal focus but now that JavaCAPS 6 is almost ready we are going to start applying GlassFish Practices to OpenESB.

Below is an initial report on one of our usual adoption indicators, mailing list traffic (Feb/Mar/Apr/May):

Drawing of Seedling

OpenESB
  • USERS (32, 34, 56, 157)
  &bull DEV (122, 158, 162, 255)
SeviceMix
  • USERS (519, 601, 689, 598)
  • DEV (385, 475, 326, 377)
Mule
  • USERS (510, 389, 789, 809)
  • DEV (128, 114, 80, 63)

OpenESB had mostly just been focused on the DEV list but now is beginning to show growth on USERS and I expect that to continue. ServiceMix seems stable. Mule ESB is showing a USERS jump aligned with MuleCon but DEV is tanking; is that just a focus away from transparency or am I looking at the wrong alias?

Comments:

What you observe with the Mule's dev list is not 'tanking'. The reason is really simple. There were 2 maintenance releases, where one doesn't necessarily have to argue every detail (the roadmap is outlined, just implement it).

Next, in case of Mule one should look at JIRA notifications traffic, as the majority of dev communication is formalized through it. Dev is the only for a free-form discussion (before it's formalized via JIRA tasks).

And don't forget that there are new products about to go live from MuleSource. They are related to Mule, but may temporarily draw traffic away from dedicated Mule lists into ones of their own.

Hope it clears things up,
Andrew

Thanks, Andrew.

I think I see the JIRA alias; is [1] the one? That seems to be similar to the ISSUES alias for OpenESB [2], correct? The ServiceMix SCM [3] is a bit related but it is really closer to putbacks, like [5]. I'll go look for the JIRA for ServiceMix; need to rush out now.

What are the two other MuleSource products you refer to? Galaxy? RESTpack? What are their mailing lists? Galaxy is kind of orthogonal to OpenESB (for exmaple, it makes sense to ask if Galaxy supports OpenESB); need to review RESTpack, and always interested in learning more.

Thanks, - eduard/o
