You have seen CAPTCHAs even if you didn't know their names. CAPTCHA stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart" and a common one is a distorted image of a word, like the one in this blog entry. BTW, turns out that Manuel Blum has been working on CAPTCHAs... he was one of my professors at UCB, nice guy, and very sharp!
