I'm finally catching up with Dave's post from last Friday. Quoting from his note on SocialSite and Apache:
As Dave says, this is "the best thing for the project and will give it the best possible chances for building a thriving community". My very best wishes to SocialSite.
Dave's presentation at ApacheCon was on Shindig for Blogs and Wikis; a number of his most recent posts have covered specific topics building to this presentation where he leveraged Shiding and SocialSite (and JSPWiki and Roller). Of special interest may be his posts on OAuth.

Any Best poll is always subjective in one way or another, so here are two more :-) First What's the Best AppServer - with several references to GlassFish. The second is a question from a prospective GF user that elicited a Very Nice Testimonial... which is a good time for a call for Adoption Stories; if you have any, drop us a mail at stories at sun dot com. The OpenMQ community page sports a new, clearner-looking OpenMQ WebSite. I hear they also have testimonials and performance numbers cooking; stay tuned. The Identity folks at Sun have released a new Compliance Manager product that elicited good press coverage (BusinessWire, SearchSecurity). This is part of Sun's Identity Products, and, like with OpenSSO, I expect the usability and applicability - not just the functionality - of all these products to continue to spread in the future. NetBeans 6.5 (now in RC) has improvements in MySQL support, including knowing about the Sakila sample, improvements to the SQL Editor, SQL code completion, displaying multiple rowsets, and SQL history. Check out Andrei's NetBeans.TV Screencast, and thanks to John for the tip. Roy (Fielding) has specific objections to the RESTful API for OpenSocial - see Roy's note and Dave's links (Roy points the comment to SocialSite, but it really is about OpenSocial). It seems there is a discussion thread on the OpenSocial group discussing how to incorporate that feedback into the spec. Finally, on the OpenStorage side, a couple of good videos discussing the role of Flash in Storage, (both available in two sizes): Bill Moore ([medium], [ipod]) and Andy Bechtolsheim ([medium], [ipod]). The ipod-sized presentation are ideal for flights :-) |

The GlassFish Migration team is soliciting participation from interested parties to Localize the tool. Contact Shinya via that blog entry or by sending email to g11n at glassfish dot dev dot java dot net if interested. Arun has another post on JSF 2.0; this time showing how to Use JSF 2.0 with Managed Beans. From OpenDS land, first Ludo points to an article at BigAdmin by Sachin Krishna Telang showing how to Use OpenDS with IBM's WebSphere. Then, Mark describes how he used OpenDS with JRuby. Dave has published two recent notes focusing on the areas where SocialSite extends the OpenSocial API. The First Post covers People and Friending, Profile Editing and Metadata, Profile Privacy Settings and Group Creation, Management and Invitations. The Second Post covers Gadget Installation and Management, Messaging and Search. Dave promises additional posts. And, from the land of Java SE, the long-awaited JavaSE 6 U10 release is now available; check Downloads, FAQ and Osvaldo's post. Despite its obscure name, this is a very important release - I'd expect additional posts on the topic early next week. |
We have one Webinar this week, plus a heads up for two forthcoming webinars:
|
• On Thursday, October 9th, 11:15am PT, a Technical Webinar on SocialSite and OpenSocial by David Johnson (of Apache Roller fame). Dave will describe the basics of OpenSocial and will introduce SocialSite and describe its benefits, architecture and Widgets and Web Services. And, a heads up to the Brazilian and Spanish speaking communities: I am planning to host two special 1 hour webinars to cover GlassFish v3 Prelude and the rest of the GlassFish roadmap. Let me know if you want a direct invitation (*). |
(*) You can contact me by email (ping me if I don't reply, my inbox is in bad shape), or just add a comment to this entry and include your email in the optional field of the comment. I'll post the information on the webinars at TheAquarium during the weekend.

From OpenESB, the first milestone for GlassFIshESB. Andi will post a longer entry later in the weekend but in the meantime check the Announcement and the Welcome from Bill. Kenai beta is out, a very strong proof that JRuby on GlassFish (v2) is ready for the prime time. The event deserves a full spotlight and I'll do one this weekend. SocialSite continues making progress. Vijay provides a list of the projects Recent Changes which include a new security model, full support for OpenSocial RESTful APIs, and more. The team will also start following the GlassFish usual model of regular milestones. From OpenDS, Terry more reports on the Logger Analyzer. I need to spend more time in the OpenDS mailing lists - or convince Ludovic et al to blog more often! And, from Intel Dave a nice screencast describing Role of Wireless in OpenSolaris. Neat to see an Intel guy talking about your Intel centrino-based OpenSolaris laptop!. Yeah for OpenSource! |

From the Grizzly Community - much simpler mod_jk support in GlassFish v3 for improved Apache HTTPD as a front-end. And, an old story about the New Leadership on Grizzly 2.0 - Congrats, Alexey! From Brazil, several GlassFish-related events during September, The Java Month: first we will have representation at JustJava and several of the 14-city tour, including a Visit by Kohsuke, and then, later in the month, by Arun including Sun TechDays in Sao Paolo. Contact Arun and Kohsuke if you want to leverage their visit. And talking about Arun, a report on how to Run Typo on GlassFish/JRuby. From Dave, news of him joining his two babies in a Social Roller; I know he has been iching to work on this for a while, looking forward to the results! From the xVM Team, a new Home Page and White Paper. And, from the land of Online Stores, two new developements: news of a New Kindle and noises about an Android App Store. The Kindle seems a sure (continued) winner; I'm curious about how Android will fare - a lot of competition out there! |

Project SocialSite was announced at JavaOne back in May (presentation) and code was released earlier this month. Installing this social computing enabler is quite simple when following the install guide (even if you can be a little disturbed by the SSO feature enabled by default). If you'd like to follow the progress of this project, the SocialSite Group Blog is probably the one place to look at. |
One of the key technology used in SocialSite is Shindig, a reference implementation for the Google-initiated OpenSocial API (now up to v0.8). This API has strong backup from all the major social networks (LinkedIn, MySpace, Plaxo, Ning, SalesForce.com, Hi5, and more) except for Facebook as of this writing. The value proposition of such a widely adopted API is that of writing an application one and deploying in on multiple social containers (sounds familiar? :-). The theory is that you can reach half a Billion users with a single OpenSocial Gadget.
Dave Johnson, creator of the the Roller blogging engine and lead for SocialSite promises more demos and code to understand the value of SocialSite as an addition to existing infrastructure such as Roller. I believe Social computing has great potential in the enterprise to create more value from better qualified interactions and connections between employees.

From the OpenSSO team, there is now a free (just need an MySun Account) Self-Paced Downloadable Lab for learning how to use OpenSSO. The course is based on OpenSSO Express Build 5. This course uses OpenSSO Build 4.5, which provides identical functionality to OpenSSO Express Build 5 which supports Apache Tomcat, Sun WebServer and GlassFish v2. Check out SuperPat, Rajeev, or go direct to the source, David. From Dave, presentations at OpenSource Days 2008 on Apache Roller and SocialSite. Plus Dave's Commentary on a note by Matt Asay on SocialSite. From Kevin a report on Mural (the Master Data Management project at GlassFish) on its Support for MySQL. From Ron our security master, an entry showing how to Use JACC to Determine Caller Roles, with detailed code snippets. Finally, not our usual topic but the Engadget piece on the Google Phone got me in Gadgets mode: NYT report on Dream, Treo Pro, BlackBerry Black, HTC Touch and Xperia X1, WiFi PAN vs Bluetooth and Lenovo IdeaPad u8. I don't know how people can track all these! but then, I am not their target audience... check out my Cell Phone :-) |

TheRegister reports on a ruling by the US Federal Court of Appeals asserting the Validity of Open Source Licenses. As usual, IANAL, but this surely looks like good news for OpenSource companies (like Sun). Wotif.COM is now a formal reference for Sun's distributions of GlassFIsh Server and OpenMQ. Arun will be Presenting at Rails Europe, Sept 2-4 in Berlin. Ana describes how to migrate SocialSite widgets from OpenSocial 0.7 to 0.8. And Patrick has Nice Words about SocialSite. LWUIT was released, with posts at OnTheRecord, Shai and Terrence. |

Check out this short Screencast for an overview of Project SocialSite, the new GlassFish project that we announced last week. The project decouples the Java-based server side and the client, and, through the OpenSocial API, enables the addition of Social Gadgets to your web site or application. |
