GlassFish China Tech Days

Trying to remain true to our "Think Globally, Act Locally" mantra, GlassFish was in China last week for Sun TechDays and a GlassFish User-Group in Guangzhou and Beijing. Check out the InfoQ coverage (Google-translated into English, Original). We've gathered some good feedback on things to improve (both in GlassFish and specifically for the Chinese market).

It seems that Anissa Lam, a member of the GlassFish engineering team and an active participant of the FishCAT program, made good connections. Speaking Cantonese in Guangzhou certainly helped out. Also very helpful were Judy, Jim, and John in organizing and delivering the content.

Also, don't forget the Chinese version of TheAquarium, the localized version of GlassFish v3 Prelude and this very nice customer reference for a leading online gaming site: ZhengTu.

... Syslogd and GlassFish, REST for OpenSSO, JAX-RS is final, China, SmugMug and ZFS and MySQL

A compilation of today's news of interest:

Marco had a small expedition tracking a bug in GlassFish v2 interacting with Syslogd. He found a solution and has Posted his Story and Patches. Still working on how the fix will migrate back to the main repository.

OpenSSO now has a set of RESTful Web Services to access its functionality to do things like authenticate, authorize, validate, etc.

And, on the same topic, the JCP just formally announced that JAX-RS 1.0 is now final. The final specification is here. First JavaEE 6 specification all completed.

Judy reports on a SunTech meeting focused on spreading adoption of GlassFish Server in China. Expect us to reach out more to that community in the very near future, in the meantime, check out Judy's note. Added - Judy pointed me to GlassFish_China Google group.

And SmugMug has a very nice note on how they have been using OpenSolaris with MySQL and ZFS in production. Check out Don MacAskill's note (don't miss the comments) and Marc's initial pointer.

cn.glassfish.org launched

GlassFish Chinese

The GlassFish community is strong in China and the potential even greater. This is why there is now a localized portal in Chinese for GlassFish - ttp://cn.glassfish.org.

This is not the brute translation of some corporate page but the ongoing work of several local GlassFish enthusiasts to provide a one stop shop for the product and the community. Congratulations and good luck to them!

The GlassFish Usage Map reports a rough 3x increase of actual users (unique IP hits per month). Now, the entire methodology for this map is the sum of several approximations and applying this to China is probably even worse (most people appear to be using limited numbers of IP address, most likely proxies) but nonetheless a nice indication of the growth in the part of the world.

LinuxInsider: Sun, Open Source Standard Bearer!
  Posted by pelegri in Sun

LinuxInsider Logo

The MySQL acquisition is quickly changing the perception of Sun's commitment to Open Source.

Earlier today I pointed to new efforts in the Health and the Education industries, here are two more stories:

• The University of Tokyo and Sun start Research on HPC and Web-based Languages
• Sun and Chinese Government announce OpenSPARC Collaboration.

Assessing all this, LinuxInsider says: Deals Cast Sun in Role of Open Source Standard Bearer.

I'm not surprised the deal is changing people's perceptions; but I am a bit surprised at how fast and how deeply it changes them. This is going to a be a very interesting year for us.

GlassFish in China - SunTech Days, Chinese Book, and more...
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

Cover of GF Book in Chinese

SunTech Days in China were a couple of weeks ago in Shangai and Beijing (Chinese Home Page, TechDays Blog). They both had content related to GlassFish, check specially Arun's Summary from Beijing.

One of the highlights was the announcement of our first GF Book in Chinese. Also, the release of GlassFish Localized into 7 languages, including Chinese and Simplified Chinese.

We continue to see increased dowloads and activity in China; for example, see the latest GlassFish GeoMap.

GlassFish-related events are happening all the time; another was SunTech Day in Tokyo last week. I know that Greg presented on jMaki and GlassFish but I believe he has not yet published a note about the event. I'll keep you posted.
