The Devoxx conference is around the corner (in just over a week) and will take place in Antwerp, Belgium as every year, only a bit earlier than usual (December was just too close to the Christmas holidays). This week-long conference runs as follows: the first two days are 3-hour sessions to go deeper into the technology (they're called University sessions). The regular conference starts on the third day and offers keynotes and 1-hour sessions. Devoxx also has "Tools in actions" (30-minute), "BOFs", Quickies (15-minute), white boards, and more. |
First and foremost, the Wednesday Sun and Oracle keynotes should not be missed (or to be watched later on Parleys) :
• Java, the Platform for the Future - Steve Harris (Oracle)
• Java EE 6 and GlassFish V3: Evolution of a Platform - Roberto Chinnici and Ludo Champenois.
But there's a also long list of GlassFish and Sun-related session for this year's session :

GlassFish Day at Jazoon (register) is only a week away and the (almost final) agenda has been posted (Marek will stand in for Harold for the Metro talk) and is now included in the GlassFish events iCal feed. This is the second year in a row we're running this free event on the first day of the Jazoon conference in beautiful Zurich. |
While not an unconference, this is meant to be an informative and pretty laid back day with lots of opportunities to interact with other attendees and the various speakers. Please make sure to register if you plan on attending (we have some space left in a nice and comfy theater).
Given the energy spent by the organizers and Christian in particular, visiting literally dozens of JUGs around Europe, I expect Jazoon to be yet another successful Java conference. James Gosling will be the first keynote speaker (other Sun speakers are listed here). Get the full agenda there and a dedicated Google iCal feed here.
Hot off the wheels of the GlassFish Workshop in Prague, the next few weeks will be packed with GlassFish events in Europe :
|
• Java Application Server Day - this Thursday in Genova, Italy. Last year's IDE shootout was reported to be a fun and instructive event (register).
|
All events are free to attend. Keep track of GlassFish-related events here and using this iCal feed.
Of course there's also CommunityOne and JavaOne (see Arun's post on GlassFish content). If you're around on Sunday prior to the events, don't forget the Unconference (please register!) and the party.

The MySQL Campus Tour has come to California. The long trip that Dups started in March from Montreal is near the end. He is getting reinforcements. Five MySQL community enthusiasts are now about to tour the campuses in North and South California, giving free lectures on MySQL. The full schedule is available in the MySQL Forge wiki. Participation is free, and it's an unique chance to get in touch with the MySQL experts and ask the tough questions. |
|
Registration is open for the MySQL Users Conference and Expo 2009. The review committee had 350 proposals to choose from, and most of the schedule is already done. The tutorials section is complete, with a juicy choice of topics from popular classics to the newest ones, all of them with some innovative contents, as the theme Innovation Everywhere requires. Register before February 16, and save as much as $200. |

L' "Aquarium Paris" is an event that took place in Paris, France last week (December 12th). The lineup of speakers and topics was quite impressive and the slides are now available. A new age with the list of GlassFish-related events is available here. |
Topics covered include GlassFish v3, Java EE 6, Jersey, OpenSSO, Grizzly Comet, OpenMQ, OpenDS, JavaFX, OpenESB/Fuji, MySQL, partners XWiki, Valtech, Nuxeo and IzPack's despot Julien Ponge. Some are in French but the majority of the slides are in English.
Alternatively, you can get a the PDFs from this url and an all-in-one SlideShare page (boy do I like tags :).

Devoxx is only a week away and the GlassFish community will have a strong presence at this major European developer conference. There is no dedicated "GlassFish AppServer" session (too much of a product pitch?), but rather a series of related technologies and sub-projects you might find useful to consider for your projects. |
The "University" section of the conference will feature a "GlassFish in Action" 3-hour session (Tuesday @ 1:30pm) with GlassFish v3 Prelude, Atmosphere, Jersey, OpenMQ, OpenESB/Fuji, WebSynergy tooling, and GlassFish-partner Nuxeo (on WebEngine). Should be fast paced, energetic, and mainly demo-driven.
Other sessions include :
• Developing multi-language portlets by Satya Ranjan
• Atmosphere by Jean-François Arcand (portable Comet based applications)
• Project Fuji by Andreas Egloff (OpenESB.next, GlassFish v3, OSGi, IFL, & JBI)
• Building dynamic web applications with Comet, a BOF by Carol McDonald.
• Connectivity with OpenMQ by project Lead Linda Schneider.
• Java EE 6 Overview by spec lead Roberto Chinnici.
• The Java API for RESTful Web Services by spec lead Paul Sandoz.
• EJB 3.1 - from Legacy to Secret Weapon by Adam Bien, prolific blogger and consultant.
• 10 reasons Java EE develpment doesn't have to be painful, by yours truly.
The conference is now full (just like previous years) and the welcome page says : "3.200 attendees from 35 countries". Should be fun!

The first half of December is going to be busy in terms of GlassFish presence at various conferences. The first one is taking place in Montreal on December 4th with Jean-François Arcand presenting on GlassFish, Grizzly, Comet, and NIO. Details are here. |
The biggest Java community event around in December is most likely Devoxx (Antwerp, Belgium - December 8th-12th). GlassFish and other sister projects will be represented in all three sections of the conference: Tools in Actions, University, and Conference. We'll post a more detailed entry on the GlassFish presence at Devoxx soon.
Finally, on December 12th, the Sun office will host a GlassFish event dubbed "The Aquarium in Paris" (check link for speaker and registration details). This is a full day of technical sessions with two tracks. The event is free but registrations are going strong and the seats are limited, so register now if you plan to attend.

The MySQL Users Conference and Expo 2009 call for participation has been extended. You have now time until November 5th to submit a proposal. At the end of the regular CfP, we received 284 proposals, which is about 100 more than we got last year, before the extension. So, we are pleased, but we want more proposals for a better choice. |
In particular, what is notably absent from the proposals, is contribution from other Sun communities. Java, Glassfish, Netbeans, Solaris, OpenOffice, are either completely amiss or faintly represented. We need good technical presentations on the above topics, involving MySQL usage and integration. And remember, the theme of the conference is Innovation Everywhere.
If you have missed the October 22nd deadline, here's your chance! Submit a proposal, now!
|
The MySQL Users Conference and Expo 2009 has open its Call for Papers. The past edition had close to 2,000 participants, and the next one shouldn't be any poorer. The theme for the next conference is Innovation Everywhere. After being a earthquake in the business world with the acquisition by Sun, MySQL continues its course towards innovation, by pursuing new users, new markets, new needs with continuous innovation. |
A novelty, compared to past edition, is an embedded MySQLCamp within the conference. It will be an open space, driven and organized by the community, oriented to developers and advanced users.

GlassFish is swimming to various places in the next few weeks:
|
Topics covered in those events range from GlassFish v2 and v3, Rails and other dynamic languages in GlassFish, Hudson, Web Services, and more. Please come by even to simply to say hello. We love to hear about how GlassFish and friends are being used around the globe!
I've updated the "Events" sections of the wiki and TheAquarium (this page).

I don't believe this was previously covered here, but Kito Mann has announced JSFOne, a conference dedicated to JavaServer Faces. The conference already has a great speaker lineup: David Geary, Michael Yuan, Google's Chris Schalk, our very own Ed Burns, Kito Mann himself, IceFaces' Ted Goddard, GlassFish community member Jason Lee, and more. |
Kito recently blogged an update to this conference. Dates are September 4th - 6th, 2008 in Vienna, VA with 40+ sessions in four different tracks.
On a related note, JSF 2.0 (a part of Java EE 6) is shaping up nicely and if you haven't already seen Ryan Lubke's series on the subject, this post has the links to all the entries. Other JSF news is available using the jsf
tag.

With the releases of OpenESB 2.0 and its commercial counter-part JavaCAPS release 6, there's a lot to cover in a user conference. |
Horizons conferences have been going on for a little while for SeeBeyond and JavaCAPS users and they now cover topics such as GlassFish, OpenESB, NetBeans and Mural (Open Source Master Data Management).
The EMEA Horizons Conference should cover all of the above topics and be held in Munich, Germany from October 6th to 9th. The Summit (detailed technical sessions) will be held on the first two days while a third day will be dedicated to Hands-on Labs. More details here.

(this should have been out a few days ago but somehow got stuck in the queue...)
|
We'll have a pretty packed agenda with shorter than usual 45-minute sessions on JAX-RS/Jersey, Comet/IceFaces (See Ted's post), OpenESB, Tooling, JavaEE, OpenDS, and GlassFish v3. We'll even have a session with a topic based on attendance feedback, courtesy of Ludo Champenois.
As a reminder, this is a free event, but you need to register. I'll try to record the sessions and make them available on the GlassFish podcast.

Marten Mickos, former MySQL CEO, now Senior SVP with Sun Microsystems, is expected in Rome, at the local University, called "La Sapienza" (= Wisdom or Knowledge). The event, on May 30, is a mix of private and public occurrences. Marten will meet local customers and Sun officials, before speaking in front of an audience at the University. More information at the other speakers' blogs. Ivan Zoratti and Giuseppe Maxia |
