One of the areas that has been improved significantly in GlassFish v3 is monitoring - see Prashanth's Functionality Overview. Most of the functionality is in the core product but some added value features will be part of the next version of the GlassFish Enterprise Manager available through Sun's commercial Sun GlassFish Portfolio. Two recent posts by Sreeni explain how to use the new functionality to Enable/disable monitoring and attach Btrace-agent and to Create pluggable container-monitoring elements. The new monitoring functionality can also be used with JRuby, as Arun describes in How to monitor a Rails app using asadmin, JavaScript, jConsole, REST. |
We are all looking forward towards GlassFish v3 FCS!

The latest sustaining (for-fee) release of the GlassFish Server is now available: GFv2.1p4 fixes 14 new bugs. GFv2.1p4 is also a patch release (p10) for the earlier GFv2U2; collectively all the patch releases in that family addressed 184 bugs. Sustaining releases are available at the Basic level of Sun GlassFish Portfolio; higher subscription levels entitle different levels of customer support and access to the GlassFish Enterprise Manager |
Recall that all our bug fixes also get incorporated into the next public release, in this case GFv2.1.1; patches give our customers the benefits of timely releases and isolated bug fixes; check Sun's GlassFish Support Model for more details.
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is a set of standards for network management, including an application layer protocol, a database schema, and a set of data objects. Since SNMP is very popular in some enterprise deployments the GlassFish Enterprise Manager includes an SNMP Monitoring AddOn for customers of the GlassFish Portfolio.
Formal Documentation includes Release Notes, Installation and QuickStart Guide, and Reference. The software is available through Sunsolve; if you are interested in using it, send a Request for Evaluation. Our future plan is to move to simpler distribution and evaluation mechanism, borrowing the lessons from the WebStack Enterprise Manager.
|
The SNMP team has a number of posts on the SNMP monitor:
• Rashewar's
Overview of the AddOn.
|
Nazrul has an Overview of The GF Enterprise Monitor Offerings that is intended to be up-to-date (I believe Oliver's last post is not yet there).

Sun's supported (L)AMP distribution, the GlassFish WebStack, was released last week and the team has several new posts on the new Enterprise Monitor for Apache:

Sun's LAMP support is assembled from two pieces: the L is from our Linux/GNU Support (see SunSolve entry), while the AMP comes from the GlassFish WebStack, which, in its latest incarnation includes Apache HTTP Server, lighttpd, memcached, MySQL, PHP, Python, Ruby, Squid, Tomcat, GlassFish (v2.1) and Hudson (features).
The inclusion of Hudson is a bit of an opportunistic move (more on that in a bit), the rest comprises a well tested, integrated, optimized, and extended component stack for your new and old Web Apps.
The WebStack can be downloaded here; the bundle includes the WebStack Enterprise Manager, which, unlike the other components, is not free right-to-use but rather is available with an eval license; this is a model like that of the GlassFish Enterprise Manager. The current release supports RHEL, Solaris and OpenSolaris (it is bundled in OpenSolaris); for additional details, check out the Documentation and Discussion Forum.

Last month we made available the latest sustaining (for-fee) release of the GlassFish Server. GFv2.1p3 fixes 18 new bugs. GFv2.1p3 is also a patch release (p9) for the earlier GFv2U2; collectively all the patch releases in that family addressed 170 bugs.

If you missed Kaj's announcement in the splashing news commotion at the latest MySQL Conference, then you may be interested to get this information again. There was a piece of news that should be extremely important for all the users. MySQL server binaries used to be split between Enterprise and Community, and they were released with separate schedules. Not anymore. Starting from April 2009, the MySQL Community and Enterprise editions are built from the same code, and they are released with the same frequency. |
There were rumors about the two editions being treated differently. Since we are talking about it, let me assure you that this is not the case. Both editions go through the same tests, and even more so now, since they come from the same tree. Until version 5.0.81, there was a separate tree for Community (with extra features), but now there is only one.
For every bug fix release, both editions are released on the same day.
Another difference that has disappeared is the version number. Previously, even numbers were for Enterprise, odd ones for Community. Now, every version number identifies both the Community and Enterprise edition.
Enjoy the best bits from MySQL. download at will!

OpenSSO Enterprise 8.0 got off to a flying start yesterday with its launch in Second Life (event replay). The IdentiCat himself, OpenSSO senior product line manager Daniel Raskin, and director of engineering for OpenSSO, Jamie Nelson, were on hand to explain how OpenSSO meets three tough challenges of single sign-on - Web access management, federation and secure Web services. Daniel and Jamie showed how OpenSSO Enterprise 8.0, known in its last release as Sun Access Manager, adds many new features, as well as being the first commercial release from the open source OpenSSO project. We've covered many of these features here at The Aquarium as they have appeared in OpenSSO; for instance, OpenDS as OpenSSO's embedded configuration store, the Fedlet and identity services. |
Back in what passes as the real world, the OpenSSO launch was widely covered by press and analysts - I've listed some of the more interesting articles and quotes over at my blog, Superpatterns.
As Daniel explained in the Second Life presentation, there's plenty more in store for OpenSSO - the focus in upcoming releases will be on areas such as carrier-grade monitoring, yet more work on ease of use, and entitlement management. As always, we'll carry the OpenSSO headlines here at The Aquarium, but if you want to immerse yourself in the OpenSSO river of news, subscribe to Planet OpenSSO.

The code freeze for Java CAPS 6 was this last wednesday, and Fred Marked the Occasion. JavaCAPS 6 uses GlassFish (v2), adds JBI support and incorporates OpenESB elements. JavaCAPS 6 is the latest in a road towards an Enterprise Quality, Easy-to-Use, OpenSource Integration platform. Check Eric's great History Recap. |
The road does not end, though, there are more OpenESB components getting ready and there is Fuji and more beyond that. See my Introduction to these projects and Jason's Detailed Description between JavaCAPS and OpenESB.

Sreekanth Setty from the Performance, Availability and Architecture Engineering group at Sun Microsystems has published a very informative paper on Deploying Sun Java Enterprise System on the Sun Fire T2000 Server using Solaris Containers (PDF). In the paper, he describes how a system administrator could deploy and tune Sun's Java Enterprise System software on a Sun Fire T2000 using Solaris Zones. The paper also includes results of the JESMark benchmark (that models an employee portal of a large corporation) that was used to test the suggested tuning parameters. |
