Hudson Adoption and CI and ALM News
  Posted by pelegri in Hudson

ALT DESCR

July is usually a slow month but instead was a record month for USERS@Hudson. Part of this is Hudson, part of this is that the whole space of CI and ALM seems to be growing.

Below are some recent additional links in this area, biased towards Hudson. Sun just released a commercial support for Hudson (within the GF WebStack) - I'll do a longer post tomorrow.

• From Sonatype, work on a Maven+Nexus+Hudson Image for EC2; Also looking for 3 FTE for Hudson.
• From the Sonar folks, a Plugin for Hudson; see John's note and the link at Sonar's Support Page.
• IBM products on Measured Capability Improvement Framework (!) and Cloud Computing for Developers.
CollabNet's ALM product, TeamForge, uses Hudson. See Features and Agile Support.
Atlassian seems interested in Software as Service.
• Oracle has some ALM Products (@Oracle, @eWeek). I'm sure we will learn more about them :-)
• New Hudson articles: Intro@SolitaryGeek and at DevX.

Added - Hudson is mentioned very positively in Andrew Binstock's SDTimes article: Integration Watch: The quickly changing market for continuous integration . Also check Julian Simpson's Commentary and Analysis on the same topic.

Hudson on iPhone and Android
  Posted by pelegri in Hudson

ALT DESCR

Hudson fans no longer have to be envious of POssO (the portable administration console for OpenSSO) or of Zen (the OpenDS variant); now you can also show-off your iPhone through the Hudson Helper for iPhone - see it in action Building Galileo.

Not content with just that, David also ported the Hudson Helper To Android!

Me thinks somebody should do a good JavaFX version... then you could run it in your TV!!

OpenSSO Plays with GoogleApps... and the iPhone
  Posted by pelegri in OpenSSO

ALT DESCR

There are a couple of nice short webcasts on OpenSSO. The first one builds on the latest OpenSSO Express; it is a short webcast that shows how to federate SSO to GoogleApps in 4 minutes using Express 7 and the SDK.

The second is a neat iPhone App (POssO) that provides access (read/write) to an LDAP directory.

... JSON with Jersey, JSF with NB and GMaps, Comet, GF ESB and Fuji M2, Andy, iPhone and Oprah

A compilation of today's news of interest:

Jakub has published a new Enterprise Tip on Jersey showing how to Configure JSON for RESTful Web Services in Jersey 1.0. Jersey is the production-quality, reference implementation of JAX-RS, the JCP standard for RESTful Web Services. JAX-RS is part of Java EE 6, but it can also be used separately. Jersey is part of GFv3 Prelude.

On JSF - first the NetBeans team shows how to Start Developing JSF Applications with the new NetBeans releases, including the forthcoming NB 6.5. Then Arun shows how to use JSF and Google Maps using Gmaps4JSF, Facelets and Mojarra on GlassFish v3 Prelude.

Comet and Atmosphere - JFA recently presented on Atmosphere - his new portable Comet framework - at the Silicon Valley JUG. The slides are Now Available.

GlassFish ESB is getting very close to its first Release Candidate (and GA/FCS release) (Milestone 2 Download) but I just noticed I had not spotlighted Mike's excellent Screencast on GlassFish ESB. Check it out and notice it is a multi-parter - very well done.

While we await GF ESB v2, we are already working on the next generation, which is based on Project Fuji. Fuji Milestone 2 released last week, and here are two additional posts: Nikki on Interceptors in Fuji and Derek on the Proxy bundle.

Andy B is adjusting his time involvement at Sun so he can spend more time with Arista Networks, "one of his startup companies" that is focused on the 10 Gigabit Ethernet switching business. The Original NYTimes Article was followed by a Clarification.

And today's toys includes Google Earth on iPhone, and Oprah endorses Kindle. Of the two, I think Oprah's endorsement will have the largest impact - is the time for the electronic reader finally here?

NB. I am a few days behind in reporting news; I'll try to catch up in the next day or two.

... Ajax and NB, Mural and MDM, RESTful Comet, GF with Hibernate and MySQL, OpenSource Contributors, Grizzlies, Fast JavaScript and more iPhone Rejections

The NetBeans folks have a new Introductory Tutorial to Ajax, now updated to the forthcoming NetBeans 6.5.

Srenga points that the DataMashup Service Engine from Mural is Part of GlassFish ESB and also points to Manish's Tutorial on building a Server-Side Data Mashup.

From Carol a Screencast on RESTful Comet, based on her previous posts.

From Peter Mularien a look at Who is Contributing to SpringSource? using FishEye on SpringFrameworks Core. BTW, if you do the same with GlassFish (core) you will find mostly Sun folks; the bulk of the non-Sun contribution is in the smaller, reusable components, like grizzly, which makes sense as that's where people want their specific features in.

From apaspai a description of how to configure GlassFish with Hibernate and MySQL (in Spanish, sorry, I couldn't resist).

From Montana Grizzlies are Rebounding from Extinction (there were already very healthy On the Web, in Canada, and, more recently, also in Prague!). And, from the WebKit folks, reports of substantial improvements on JavaScript interpretation using SquirrelFish Extreme.

And Apple does it Again, this time with Mail, and it Gets Slashdotted.

... JSF Features, Griffon, Sailfin Competition, Size of EJB 3.1, IzPack and IPS, and Apple Store Revolts
  Posted by pelegri in NOTD

A compilation of today's news of interest:

From the land of the JSF 2.0 Spec Ed is asking for feedback on the last list of JSF Features that are considered by the Expert Group. The Full List has 37 entries, of which 20 are Listed as Hard.

Griffon is a Grails-like framework that uses Groovy and Swing for RIA. Geertjan has already written an Overview and now explains how to add support to it in NetBeans by Converting Grails to Griffon. Both NetBeans and GlassFish Server are very inclusive on the scripting front: a very warm welcome to our party!

A quick heads-up from the Sailfin community: a last chance to enter the Sailfin/Ericsson Contest, the deadline is Sept 30th.

Adam continues his advocacy for EJB 3.x, specially EJB 3.1 and points out that the implementation of EJB 3.1 is very small! Ken just told me that the EG is making good progress with the next public draft, so stay tuned on that front.

Julien continues to work on IzPack for GlassFish (as time is available!) and now has a version using the IPS Packaging system and GlassFish v3. Check out JPZ's note, while ChrisK goes into More Dicussion of the IPS details. The download is here - Julien said he would try to get a new rev "soon"...

And noises of unhappiness with the recent Rejection of Podcaster from the iTunes AppStore because: <quote>Since Podcaster assists in the distribution of podcasts, it duplicates the functionality of the Podcast section of iTunes<\quote>. See the comments from Spier (the developer of Exposure) and Gruber.
