GlassFish v2.1 and v3 community IzPack installers
  Posted by alexismp in GlassFish

Julien Ponge is at it again with a set of New Installers for both GlassFish v2.1 and v3 prelude. These are single-file installers with OS-specific features such as the new privileges elevation on Windows Vista & 7. They are based on a preview of IzPack 4.2.1 which is set to be released any day now in a final version.

GlassFish Update Center bootstrapping is also a nice touch for these new installers. Check out the source code if you're interested in how Julien did all this.

While we're on the topic of Julien, you may be interested in his recent interview about teaching Java EE with GlassFish.

... EoD in JavaEE 6, More JSF 2.0 Samples, IzPack, OpenStorage and Tufte, Sun Restructuring

A compilation of today's news of interest:

Radio Receiver Icon

Java EE 6 builds on the Ease of Development theme of its predecessor and Roberto's latest post sketches the new additions, which includes the improvements in Servlet 3.0 (tune in to Rajiv's presentation on Dec 4th), JAX-RS, JSF 2.0, EJB 3.0, WebBeans, Bean Validation and more. Roberto's webinar is on Dec 18th.

Jim has a series of posts showing the benefits of JSF 2.0; the latest entry shows how to write a Spinner Component, and then how to Adding Styles to it and, then, making the implementation Fully Reusable. Check it out!

Juien created a new IzPack installer for GlassFish v3; check out the GFv3 Installer, a description of the New Features developed for it, and the corresponding IzPack 4.1.1 announcement.

I'm a fan of Tufte, so it is very pleasant to see a reference to his work in Paul Murphy's Review at ZDNet of our recent OpenStorage release. Paul refers to the systems ability for real time monitoring and action (like in this screenshot); hopefully we will see more exploration of these principles in the industry. Thanks to Brian for the tip.

The biggest news for Sun this week was Friday's Restructuring announcement (PR, Tim O'Brien, The Register). It is still early so just some observations based on publicly available information: GlassFish is mentioned prominently (and positively) in all the news pieces; it will be good to be closer to the MySQL folks; we will all miss Rich Green; by all metrics GlassFish adoption continues to grow (see, for example, Admin Ping Map).

IzPack for SailFin

More experimentation with IzPack: Naman reports its use in an Installer for SailFin.

The overall experience is like that of the GlassFish Installer, which we are considering placing as an additional Java.Net installer.

GlassFish IzPack installer reloaded and improved
  Posted by alexismp in GlassFish

IzPack logo

Julien Ponge has just announced the availability of an improved version of the GlassFish installer powered by the shinny new 3.1.1 release of IzPack.

Since the previous release, the installer has gained support for Solaris (x86 and SPARC) and more flexibility in domain creation (domain name, port, password, etc..). It also optionally starts the domain on your behalf and points you to the admin console. You can chose between a MacOS, Windows or "universal" installer.

It seems that Julien has been getting a fair amount of download without even being listed on the GlassFish homepage as a download option. Maybe we should change the later.

IzPack installer for GlassFish

Julien Ponge had promised to release his IzPack-powered GlassFish installer soon after v2ur1 was released. It is now available. Instructions and download location HERE.

This is a single-archive download for three platforms: Linux, Mac, and Windows. The installer for Solaris should come later. Let us and Julien know what you think - both how it compares to the existing install experience as well as what could be improved in Julien's installer.

IzPack-powered GlassFish installer

IzPack installer for GlassFish

There's been some recent activity around the GlassFish install experience lately and that's a good thing (tm).

Julien Ponge, GlassFish Community member and creator of IzPack has announced an IzPack-based GlassFish installer. This is a single jar installer (around 80M) containing everything for Windows, Mac and Linux. Solaris should follow. The jar is created using the "official" GlassFish installer binaries and a Ruby script to compute the platform-specific files and generate the IzPack XML descriptor.

The bits will soon be available as well as "source code of the scripts and IzPack-specific files needed to generate the installer under a liberal MIT-style license". Thanks Julien!
