Here are wwo ways to get into EJB 3.x. For the complete beginner, Adam has a EJB 3.0 in 5 minutes. And for the advanced user, PACKT Books just published Michael Sikora's EJB 3 Developer Guide home page, TOC, Amazon). Both use the GlassFish Server For a while I thought that EJBs were always going to be - or be perceived as - "too (conceptual) heavy"; maybe EJB 3.1 and EJB3.1 lite will actually change this. More EJB notes at EJB posts at TA |
Sun offers quite a number of training courses, and some of them are even free. Some I noticed this week:
|
Trond highlights two very interesting free Webinars next week with top speakers (tip): "Highly scalable solutions with MySQL and Memcached" (Wed) and "Designing and Implementing Scalable Applications with Memcached and MySQL" (Thu). Marina points to free Student Courses as part of the resources at the Student Portal. Arun and Daniel mention Sang's latest course on Ruby and Rails. Sang's Java Passion site has many good online courses using the GlassFish Server, including JavaEE, Web Services and EJB. |
Sun has many other courses, sometimes it's just a bit hard to find them. For example, the site for online and in classroom courses offered by Sun is http://www.sun.com/training and many of these are related to GlassFish, but a Search for "glassfish" will yield only a few of those.
We are working to fix that last problem, and I try to capture courses I know at GlassFishForBusiness, but what we really need is a full-time librarian... ideally a super one, like Conan the Librarian.

Amis B.V. is hosting a workshop on the GlassFish Server, OpenESB and NetBeans this next week, Thursday, May 22nd, in their offices in Nieuwegein (Google Maps). Presenters are Wouter and Alexis. Check out the Event Details and Wouter's Note. |
AMIS has traditionally focused on Oracle consultancy (see their Activities Page); it is very nice to see them adding some GlassFish activities.
Please let us know if your company or community is hosting GlassFish-related events and we will provide it extra visibility. The only way GF will reach really wide adoption is with the help of many hands.

I had not noticed that the Enterprise Tech Tips is now available as a Blog (with associated feeds - RSS and Atom). For example, here is the Japex entry we highlighted recently. And yesterday (Monday) Sun released its financial results via a News feed. The world has changed; our engineering team could not work without Feeds (and Roller!). BTW, Ed is soliciting your suggestions on Tech Tip topics. |

The next "Ask the Experts" is on the Open Source Java Project. This will give the Java community an opportunity to ask questions about Sun's open source initiatives, including GlassFish. Got a question about Sun's open-sourcing of its Java platform implementations? Read the FAQ . Then post any follow-up questions during this Ask the Experts session, week of Jan. 16-19, and get answers from representatives of Sun's Java platform implementations. |

The Java EE 5 Tutorial has been available online for a while, but on Nov 6th (2006) it also went on-print. It should be available for purchase at technical bookstores and online - see for example at Amazon.Com. |

I had lost track of one of our earliest bloggers: Filippo (perhaps in part because he moved his blog to a new location?). Anyhow, he has New Java EE 5 book, has been in a J2EE to Java EE Tour (see the video) and most recently has been Using GlassFish "in the trenches". His report is positive: |
...The overall impression by now is very positive. In less than four days I’ve been able to sketch a prototype of an integration project and, most important, to learn other interesting features of the platform...
He is promising more blogs on the topic, and we will report on them...

We have added more presentations to the Presentations Page at the GlassFish Wiki, including:

Remember that training class you Helped Fine-Tune?, the real thing is now available as a 2-day, 6-module, Java EE 5 in-depth Web-based course. The list of courses and presenters is very complete: Overview (Bill), EJB 3 (Linda and Ken), JavaPersistence (Linda), Web Services (Roberto, Rajiv, and Dhiru), Web Tier (Ed and Jan) and Java Blueprints (Inderjeet and Greg). |
Full content of the Sun's catalog is here. The Training Options are: Classroom, Live via the Web, Recorded, via the Web, CD-ROM, and Team Training. Classroom training requires on-site instructors and this is a global operation, so, if you are interested, check the Instructor Certification Process.
Check New and Upcoming courses; what other areas would you want to see covered? What about JAXB 2.0? What else?

Sang is doing another of his free online courses. This time is Java EE with Passion! The course covers quite a bit of material, with more emphasis on the Web Tier area, but some of the new Java EE 5 APIs are also covered. This course is conducted by email; check What is like to take this course. Coincidentally, the new, in-depth, course on Java EE 5 from Sun is also available; I'll describe it in an entry tomorrow morning. |

Dennis shows graphically the Life of an OpenSSO Session including Creation, Validation, FailOver, Recovery and Termination. Previously he had shown SSO and Access Control and Authentication. |
I have asked Dennis to consider posting all these slides as presentations under Creative Commons licenses at the Presentations Page.
