The NetBeans team released a new NB + MySQL + GF bundle (download) a couple of weeks ago but I didn't time to write about it. The bundle includes:
• NetBeans 6.1

You may have seen Jonathan's note on OpenSolaris, MySQL and GlassFish being available on Amazon EC2. Details on the OpenSolaris portion are available at the EC2 Blog (Welcome, Launch and New Limits), at Dileep's Blog and at the EC2@Sun and OS@EC2 sites. For MySQL check the MySQL@EC2 site. |
I know that Homer worked on the GlassFish
AIM AMI but it all happened right before
JavaOne and I didn't have time to check more.
He told me he is writing a note on it, and I'll spotlight it when it is ready.
And thanks to Charles for some of the Links.
I went by the MySQL Users Conference on Tuesday and it looked good, plenty of energy and attendance. Check PlanetMySQL for reports, the bloggers are doing a good reporting job; SlashDot is not, though - see below. A quick pass through highlights:

Computer Sweden has a couple of nice article on OpenSource, GlassFish and MySQL.
|
The first CS Article covers the trend in IT software spending, specifically in the AppServer market, using GlassFish as an example of both Open Source momentum and Sun's success in that market. The article has an interview with the chief architect of Net Entertainment's (Overview, Customers) about their selection of GF v2 where he describes how they are "Saving 300,000 kronor a year with GF" and how they selected Sun rather than IBM, BEA, or JBoss. |
The second article covers the GlassFish/MySQL bundle released late March which is here dubbed as relevant for people interested in Ajax or Comet (or both).
Note - Some of our colleagues from Sweden helped with the translation and we also used Stars21. If you have a better english translation, please add a pointer to it in the comments to this entry.

Earlier this week we Announced the availability of our fist MySQL and GlassFish bundle (Download Page). This bundle requires some post-install steps, which are described by Sathyan and in the official docs which shows how to Install, Start and Stop the MySQL Server. We hope to start showing examples of how to use the bundle; in a first post, Sreeni reports how run Java EE 5 Samples. |
|
First step in a long-term relationship: we have posted a GlassFish and MySQL bundle to our usual Download Page. This bundle consists of GF V2 U1 with the MySQL Community Server 5.0 (5.0.51a) and MySQL JDBC driver 5.1.6. The MySQL acquisition was finalized a month ago, on Feb 26th. This first bundle is intended to expose the MySQL Server to the GlassFish community. We will do more complete offerings later in the year, after the JavaOne rush. Check out the bundle details in the writeup by the project lead, Sathyan. As usual, feedback on the release to USERS@glassfish.dev.java.net. |
More blogs and useful pointers on the topic:
• Sathyan Intro and Instructions.
• Alexis has Overview and Setup.
• Sreeni shows how to
Run Sample Apps.
• Docs.Sun.Com documentation covers
Install, Start and Stop MySQL Server.

The Google Summer of Code 2008 just started. Check out the Program Site and its FAQ. GlassFish did not apply to the program this year, but I'm happy to see that MySQL did and got accepted. Kaj provides an Introduction to the program, with a pointer to the Project Ideas and Giuseppe has a Call for Mentors. Also check out the ideas for MySQL Proxy (Giuseppe) and those for PHP (Jay). |

More GlassFish blogging from Munich. This time Siegfried has written a two parter on how to use Guice (the Resource Injection framework Google developed for AdWords) and Hibernate. part I introduces a simple Hibernate Application using GlassFish and MySQL, while part II transforms it to use Guice. Full sources are included. NetBeans project information is also included.
Guice recently won a
Jolt Award;
see the
Finalists.

Also check out Sigfried's earlier post on GlassFish and Quercus. Looking forward to more!

While MySQL 5.1 is almost ready, MySQL 6.0 is already in alpha with many new features, including a Beta of Falcon. Falcon (Intro, White Paper) is designed for typical Web 2.0 workloads in modern (i.e. many cores, large memory) machines. Check out the MySQL 6.0 home page and the ChangeLog and Download and Contribution pages. Thanks to Hakan for this tip. |

One of the nice, and funny things about working on the MySQL deal is that we took turns saying: "I like how you solved this problem, tell me more!" The deal closed; learning time starts... Jay Pipes is Mr MySQL Forge and he just released Forge 2, check out his announcement and Guiseppe's additional commentary ([1], [2]). Maybe we can invite Jay (et al.) for a presentation at a future GlassFish meeting? |
BTW, I see that Jay's experience with MediaWiki was similar to that of one of our teams: very hard to mold it for new tasks.

The MySQL acquisition is quickly changing the perception of Sun's commitment to Open Source. Earlier today I pointed to new efforts in the Health and the Education industries, here are two more stories: |
• The University of Tokyo and Sun start
Research on HPC and Web-based Languages
• Sun and Chinese Government announce
OpenSPARC Collaboration.
Assessing all this, LinuxInsider says: Deals Cast Sun in Role of Open Source Standard Bearer.
I'm not surprised the deal is changing people's perceptions; but I am a bit surprised at how fast and how deeply it changes them. This is going to a be a very interesting year for us.
A second (after Open eHealth) Open Source industry announcement today.

Sun and the rSmart Group announced Kuali-based learning solutions leveraging Solaris(TM), MySQL, GlassFish(TM), OpenSSO and OpenESB. Details in the Press Release and at rSmart.COM |

The Sun/MySQL deal has closed! Check out PR announcement, Jonathan's welcome and Kaj's note; more entries include mysql@TA, mysql@BSC and at Planet MySQL. Barton ComputerWorld and SJ Mercury News. The whole thing moved very fast (six weeks!) and, equally impressive is the amount of material that is already present at Sun's site, including: |
• MySQL@Sun page,
• MySQL Technical Specifications,
• Training Material,
• Download,
•
Administration Resources
There is a World Tour planned (I bet it will be fun to do, but I had to decline!), and don't miss the MySQL Users Conference. And stay tuned for further activity around MySQL and our middleware communities and products!

Monty has started blogging and has announced the Early Release of the sources and Specs for Maria (aka MyISAM++). Also check out comments from Guiseppe (the Data Charmer) and from the Performance blog. Maria and Falcon are the two newest Storage Engines in MySQL. Falcon is already in Feature Preview; also see Robin's Overview: Part 1 and Part 2. |
If and when the MySQL Acquisition closes we will start tracking MySQL activites more closely here. A very good place for MySQL information is PlanetMySQL.ORG.
