ALT DESCR

I forgot to mention that there is a WebEx-based webinar starting at 10am PT (in 1/2 hour) on GlassFish ESB. Presenters are Bruce Tierney and Prabhu Balashanmugam, from the GlassFish ESB team at Sun.

To enroll, follow this link. You will need to give your contact info to get the invitation.

I'm going to try to group all webinar announcements over the weekend to give extra warning time and to avoid colliding with other news.

Update: the webinar is now available for replay.

GlassFish ESB v2.1 M1 - Now Available
  Posted by pelegri in OpenESB

ALT DESCR

Most of the products in GlassFish Porfolio (webinar set) use the latest GlassFish v2.1 but a couple are still using the older GF v2. This is now getting fixed for GlassFish ESB: Mark has announced the first Milestone for GlassFish ESB v2.1.

In addition to the new GF Server, the release also includes the IEP SE (Intelligent Event Processor) and the Scheduler BC (see Full list of Components).

Go, download it, and let us know how it goes.

The photo? Its from Mark's Motorcycle Mania series and it somehow seemed appropriate.

DZone's Masoud Kalali took an interest in project OpenESB and set out to learn more about it. Being Project OpenESB's community lead, he asked me for an interview. In the interview Masoud asked me about the project's history, the relationship with Java CAPS, the competition, scaling, and future plans for OpenESB. The interview is published on the DZone website.

InfoQ on Distributed JBI using OpenESB and Shoal
  Posted by fkieviet in OpenESB

InfoQ published an article on distributed JBI by Derek Frankforth. In this article Derek describes different topologies and describes what topologies are available in project OpenESB. Derek reports that a new topology being developed in OpenESB is heterogeneous clustering based on Project Shoal running in GlassFish.

An interesting read! Check it out at InfoQ.

Introducing the Sun GlassFish Portfolio
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

Sparky is growing up! Today, Sun announced the Sun GlassFish Portfolio (PR) the Sun GlassFish Communications Server (SailFin) and the Sun GlassFish Mobility Platform.

ALT DESCR

The key components in the GlassFish Portfolio are the Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server (including OpenMQ), the Sun GlassFish ESB (with OpenESB), the Sun GlassFish Web Space Server (nee WebSynergy, leveraging GlassFish and Liferay) and the Sun GlassFish Web Stack, which includes supported and optimized versions of Apache Web Server, Memcached and other popular Web applications.

Full details of the GlassFish Portfolio are at its Home page. The GetIt tab has a very good table with all the features, services and pricing - check it out!

Sun also issued a Release highlighting adoption of the GlassFish products in companies from Telcos (T-Mobile), Health (Medavie Blue Cross) and startups (TravelMuse). Check the PR for a full list, plus our Adoption Stories and Sun's more formal Customer References.

As in past events, we are going to post a number of blog entries related to different facets of the products announced today; we will (attempt to) use the tag GlassFishPortfolio consistently to help search through them. We are also going to host a set of short (10') presentations at TheAquarium Online to cover this material, with the usual recordings for later playback.

Kevin Meeks evaluates GlassFish ESB, and a free GlassFish ESB tutorial
  Posted by fkieviet in OpenESB

ALT DESCR

Kevin Meeks evaluated a number of different Open Source projects for for an enterprise architecture technology stack, one of them being GlassFish ESB. He published his findings in an article on developer.com.

Kevin illustrated his experiences with a short tutorial, guiding the reader from installation to creating and testing a simple composite application. If you're new to GlassFish ESB, this is well worth your time to get acquainted with GlassFish ESB quickly.

Kevin looked at what’s available in the OpenESB community, the uptake of the community, the cost model, etc. and liked what he saw. He concludes: There are significant developments underway in the GlassFish project community, and as your SOA/EA efforts may face tighter budget challenges, there is real value to be leveraged by considering the GlassFish Java EE Server and GlassFish ESB project (...). The excellent integration with NetBeans IDE simply adds to the value proposition.

Two new components in project OpenESB
  Posted by fkieviet in OpenESB

ALT DESCR

Two new components were introduced in the OpenESB project. They are both JCA Resource Adapters, one for HL7, and one for SAP. This brings the number of components in the OpenESB community to 45. Although both adapters originated in Java CAPS and were released as part of Java CAPS 6, they are in the incubator in OpenESB until they are made part of the automated build process.

For more information see the OpenESB home page and the Component Catalog.

Deslatech - Integration for Brazilian Hospitals
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

Thanks to Arun for our latest Adoption Story: Deslatech is an SI located in Brazil that has built a fairly typical EAI application for Kitmed, a logistics operator in the hospital/warehousing space.

The application uses OpenESB, OpenMQ and the GlassFish Server. Check out the details of the story at our Stories blog and at the Detailed Questionnaire.

Deslatech is our 34th entry in our (informal) Stories series. Some informal stories eventually "graduate" to Sun's Formal Customer Reference Site - like with Wotif.Com. If you are a happy user of GlassFish and want to contribute back to the community, please consider sharing your story. Contact us at stories at sun dot com.

ALT DESCR

Docs.sun.com has been around for a long time and its look-and-feel had not been updated significantly for a bit. But today it sports a New Look and it looks very good! Check these out:

GFv2, GFv2 U1/U2, GFv3 Prelude
Portal 7.2, JavaCAPS, MQ, and much more
• Nice dynamic browsing and improved searching.
• Localized in 12 languages!

Very nice! I would only want to have the ability to annotate the documents, otherwise, this looks very good!

Added - Also check out Susan's Overview of the changes.

GlassFish Presence at Devoxx next week
  Posted by alexismp in GlassFish

Devoxx Logo

Devoxx is only a week away and the GlassFish community will have a strong presence at this major European developer conference. There is no dedicated "GlassFish AppServer" session (too much of a product pitch?), but rather a series of related technologies and sub-projects you might find useful to consider for your projects.

The "University" section of the conference will feature a "GlassFish in Action" 3-hour session (Tuesday @ 1:30pm) with GlassFish v3 Prelude, Atmosphere, Jersey, OpenMQ, OpenESB/Fuji, WebSynergy tooling, and GlassFish-partner Nuxeo (on WebEngine). Should be fast paced, energetic, and mainly demo-driven.

Other sessions include :
Developing multi-language portlets by Satya Ranjan
Atmosphere by Jean-François Arcand (portable Comet based applications)
Project Fuji by Andreas Egloff (OpenESB.next, GlassFish v3, OSGi, IFL, & JBI)
Building dynamic web applications with Comet, a BOF by Carol McDonald.
Connectivity with OpenMQ by project Lead Linda Schneider.
Java EE 6 Overview by spec lead Roberto Chinnici.
The Java API for RESTful Web Services by spec lead Paul Sandoz.
EJB 3.1 - from Legacy to Secret Weapon by Adam Bien, prolific blogger and consultant.
10 reasons Java EE develpment doesn't have to be painful, by yours truly.

The conference is now full (just like previous years) and the welcome page says : "3.200 attendees from 35 countries". Should be fun!

Project Fuji milestone 3 furthers the cause of GlassFish ESB - A Composition Cornucopia for Thanksgiving
  Posted by andi in OpenESB

Project Fuji logo

Lots of exciting developments in the GlassFish ESB world; hot on the heels of the GlassFish ESB v2 release candidate with its enterprise features and commercial support we're also showing that we have more big plans for the evolution of this platform.

With Milestone 3 of Project Fuji we give you the keys to test drive some of the platform enhancements we're working on for GlassFish ESB.next and allow you to be an active participant in driving the direction.

If you haven't been following Project Fuji closely you might be interested to know that there is both an "evolutionary" and "revolutionary" side; Adapters and Containers from v2 also are used in Fuji, and applications built in v2 deploy and run on Fuji. Where we're innovating is in looking at the productivity in every layer; ensuring we are tops in flexibility, agility and ease of use.

Milestone 3 of Project Fuji introduces a (dare I say very cool) web based tooling option for composing services.

Check out the Fuji Milestone 3 Screencast which shows how to use simple drag and drop in a browser to easily build the same scenario that was built in Milestone 2 via the domain specific language "IFL" for composing services.

It's worth noting that the web tooling builds on top of the domain specific language and hence round tripping is easy; you can for example check out the project built in the browser from subversion and edit it in your IDE of choice, just as shown in milestone 2.

This gets us one step closer to the mantra of Fuji: Productivity through flexibility, agility, and ease of use.
