Solaris Express Developer Edition (SXDE), the Sun OpenSolaris-based distribution for Solaris, Java, and Web 2.0 developers has a new release out: 1/08. Ludo has a post about the integrated web stack as well as a 10-minute screencast. After giving SMF privileges for Apache/mySQL servers, Ludo shows how the user can use a very simple graphical tool to start/stop and configure services. He also walks you through a small PHP/jMaki/Ajax pre-packaged demo with a mySQL backend. He finally uses NetBeans' PHP support and auto-registering of the AMP-stack to author and debug a simple PHP application. Pretty slick! |
SXDE also comes with the NetBeans 6/GlassFish v2 pre-configured bundle and if you're using the VMWare image, I would recommend upgrading the amount of memory from 512 to 2Gb. And in case you're wondering, the VMWare image password for root is SXDE (see also the FAQ).

The pet store may be the most famous of Sun's sample web applications, but it's certainly not the only one. Sun's Web 2.0 team has put together a collection of live samples covering a slew of web technologies--AJAX, Dojo, RSS, JSP, JSF, Woodstock, jMaki, and more. And, of course, they all run on the GlassFish Application Server. |
Try each sample out directly on the web site. Then follow the "learn more" links to get additional information on how each was made and how you can use similar techniques in your own work. As the team says, "We hope you're inspired by these apps, components, and widgets."

Jive Software has a very nice, J2EE-based, forum software that Sun has been using for many years (like here). Jive is very portable and we had already reported that it runs on GlassFish. Ken just tried Jive's latest: Clearspace, an integrated set of collaboration tools that includes a Wiki, Blogs, Forums and IM and he reports that Clearspace works great on GlassFish. Via TheGalaxy, Kathy Sierra recently wrote an interesting blog on the benefit of using jargons. She also argues that "web 2.0" is more like a jargon (good) than a buzzword (bad). Whether you agree with her stand on "web 2.0", or disagree, the blog would definitely help a closet geek to come out and talk all that jargon! :-D

Sun's WebServer 7.0 provides a Java Web Tier as well as good connectivity (NSAPI, Fast-CGI) with many non-Java applications. As an example of the former, Seema also shows how to run Blojsom, which follows from Blojsom on GlassFish, as did our previously reported Phobos on Web Server. As an example of the latter, Seema describes in detail how to Run Ruby On Rails. All together, the Sun WebServer is a good Web 2.0 Platform, and it will get better as one will be able to run the latest Java Web Tier by Plugging the GlassFish Web Tier. |

Greg and Ludo have posted a new screencast showing the NetBeans 5.5 plugin for jMaki. The Plugin shows a palette of widgets and lets you create a project using jMaki, drop a widget into a presentation page (like JSP), and then customize via an editor the properties of the jMaki widget. The development cycle is very fast since all that happens is a that a new (JSP) page is reloaded. Simple, useful and very compelling. |

It seems that, little by little, we are getting our message out; check Greg reflections on Simon's keynote at Enterprise Java Australia (and Kudos to Simon for a good keynote). I'm very much looking forward to the beta of GlassFish V2; I expect substantial increased adoption from then up through the FCS around April. |
BTW, I see that Greg is a maintainer of ehcache and I've asked him for references of uses of ehcache with GlassFish.
Via TheGalaxy, Dion Hinchcliffe, after his popular blog "Best Web 2.0 Software List", has recently written about the habits of highly effective Web 2.0 sites. Looking beyond Ajax and the visual site design aspect of Web 2.0, Dion tries to "capture the deeper design patterns and business models that seem to be powering the most successful Web sites and online companies today". He concludes that the essentials of leveraging Web 2.0 include ease of use, aggressively add feedback loops to everything, continuous release cycles etc etc. See Dion's blog here.
