GlassFish v3 - Platform Services and Remote Restart
  Posted by pelegri in GlassFish

ALT DESCR

GlassFish v3 includes all the benefits from its Java EE 6 compliance and its modular, services and OSGi-based design, but it is also the opportunity to address a number of long-standing RFEs and issues that were to hard to address on the old v2 architecture.

Byron recently reported on two of these RFEs. The first is Platform Services Support: it is now possible interact with Solaris/OpenSolaris SMF and Windows Services. Check Byron's writeup and give us feedback so we can try to incorporate it in our final September release.

The second feature is on the ability to do Remote Server Restart via the CLI or an HTTP-based request (I need to check with Byron if the feature made it into the admin console).

Check these out, and please give us feedback so GlassFish v3 is as useful to you as possible.

ZFS and more in Hudson
  Posted by pelegri in Hudson

ALT DESCR

Kohsuke has added several OS-specific features to Hudson, including authentication on Unix using the OS-specific identity/groups and remote Windows slave management. Hudson can also now switch its workspace to a ZFS file system.

ZFS support is a precursor to additional features like better backups and faster clean builds and matrix builds. It will be interesting to see whether these features increase noticeably the market share of Solaris and OpenSolaris as Hudson platforms. More details in Kohsuke's note.

Competition is good - Palm Pre, Sony Vaio P, Dell Adiamo, Windows 7
  Posted by pelegri in NOTD

I am a strong believer that Competition is Good for Customers, and this week's CES Show was another reminder; some examples from there:

ALT DESCR

Palm Pre - This seems one of the best of the iPhone challengers - looks like a good OS, multi-tasking/touch, physics, nice design and a keyboard. See homepage, wikipedia, Gizmodo and PCWorld.
Sony Vaio P - This one looks like a nice netbook, with a wide screen, build around a good sized keyboard. The use of a trackpoint means the whole thing can be sized just for the keyboard - would love to try it out. Competition for the "lesser" netbooks and the always rumored iPod tablet? See Gizmodo, Engadget.
Dell Adiamo - This one (if the promise matches the buzz) would compete with MacBook Air; if it keeps with Dell's pricepoints, it would help with the pricing. See Gizmodo and Engdget.
Windows 7 - This one, I hope will help keep Apple focused in doing a good job with MacOS. Ubuntu and, I'd hope soon, OpenSolaris, can help with the pressure, but I've felt that the quality of the desktop offerings from Apple has decreased since the iPod/iPhone started generating so much money, and they can use a strong competidor. See homepage and Gizmodo.

Now, back to our usual topics, helping you by providing our own competition :-)

Masoud is ahead of us! Check out his One-Pager on GlassFish v3 Prelude. The actual release of GFv3 Prelude will be split into two parts: the bits will go out this week but the special webinar is not until next week, on November 6th.

Packt Publishing is looking for an author to write a new book focused on the administration features in GlassFish server to complement their Java EE5 Development using GlassFish Application Server. Check out the Authors info, and contact Kshipra Singh (kshipras at packtpub dot com) if interested.

Carla writes about Logging features in GlassFish v3 Prelude. Overall, logging in GFv3 will now use the JDK logging facility but not all features are implemented yet, so check on Carla's writup to see the details and plans.

Shoal is getting close to the 1.1 release, as part of the preparations for GFv2.1 and Sailfin. Check out Changelog, Shreedhar's Summary Note, and Download Page.

VirtualBox is now available for retail purchase at Amazon.uk (not in the US store, though). It's not yet a best seller; as of this writing, it is ranked 15,244 - let's see how if it goes up...

Plenty of Microsoft news aligned with PDC 2008. There is now a pre-Beta Windows 7 that includes plenty of consumer-friendly features like improved navigation and taskbars and multi-touch gestures, as well as lightweight, web-friendly versions of Office products. They have also announced their Cloud offering, Azure, but I've not had much time to check it except to note that Yousef is involved. On a more techie side, Rajeev reports that MS will add SAML 2 Support, which is good news for OpenSSO et al.

... JavaEE 6 Progress, IPS Wiki, Hudson and Windows, Graphical BPEL, and Sony PRS700 vs Kindle 2

A compilation of today's news of interest:

Roberto has provided a Schedule Update for JavaEE 6. As a brief summary: JAX-RS is in Final Draft, EJB 3.1 in Public Draft, and the remaining specs will also be in PD by end of October, and all the specs are planned to be final by JavaOne 09 (June 2-5, 2009).

Chris, in the UC2 team, has announced a new user-focused site for the multi-platform IPS-based tool. The IPSBestPractices site resides at Wikis.Sun.Com where it can leverage additional functional facilities and (equally more important) improved availability.

The latest Hudson builds (Download, ChangeLog) have new facilities for self-installing on Windows servers. Check Kohsuke's entries on Hudson 1.253 (the latest is 1.255) and Installing Hudson on Windows Got Easier.

BPEL is a key tool for users of tools like GlassFish ESB (site) but, as Adam points out, its diagrams are not necessarily at the ideal level. So, he has been exploring how to overlay some SVG diagrams over the BPEL ones. Check out Adam's Graphical Monitoring for BPEL 2 and give him feedback.

Finally, the retailers are already getting ready for Christmas so we are seeing the last batch of consumer-focused devices, including the latest E-Books: Sony's PRS 700 and Amazon's Kindle 2. The Sony looks prettier and has a touch-screen, but the G3 purchase connectivity of the Kindle is still very compelling. We will see...

Kohsuke is back from Brazil and has released Hudson 1.253 (will they ever get to Hudson 2?), now with improved support for Windows in Distributed Builds and also support for Parametrized Builds.

More on the new SpringSource Enterprise Support. Ryan (a long-term user of the GlassFish Server) was considering purchasing enterprise support for SpringSource and writes about his experience and quoted price tag.

Sun and Greenplum are setting up a very large data warehouse for Fox Interactive Media on top of Solaris, ZFS and a bunch of Thumpers. Check out Jonathan's Writeup and the joint Press Release

Arun is still in Brazil for the rest of this week and next week. Today he was at DF JUG in Taguatinga. And, if you want to listen to Kohsuke presentation to CeJUG, check out the bottom of the page on the Aniversário do CEJUG - nice audience!

The SocialSite team is encouraging external participation: SocialSite Wants You! Check out the List of Proposals for ideas.

Windows Service for GlassFish
  Posted by arungupta in GlassFish

Windows Logo

GlassFish can be installed on a variety of platforms - Solaris Sparc, Solaris X86, Windows, Linux, and MacOS.

The installer of the Sun's distribution of GlassFish - Sun Java System Application Server - can create a Windows Service but that installer is not part of the GlassFish distro, so Ryan created a simple command to do it.

Get yourself familiar with GlassFish by visiting the Screencast Theater.

One more positive data point on the Vista and Java threads (Charles, Chet, Alexis), but, this time, on the server side: Dinesh reports success in running GlassFish on Vista following the QuickStart Instructions. Check the details at Dinesh's Blog.

Yet another positive thread is the whole set of Web Services Interoperability PlugFests between Windows Communication Framework and GlassFish (courtesy of ProjectTango/WSIT). The latest report is here.
