Java RIAs, Languages and JavaFX

That cooperation
and competition
are the drivers of evolutionary systems is one reason that Java in the RIA
space is a fascinating place to be right now. Many have high hopes in
the competition for JavaFX,
which, aside from having its foundation in the Java Runtime, has new
special purpose
language, media
and cross-device
capabilities.
But its not the only RIA technology betting on the Java Runtime, as was interesting to note here.
Based on Swing and the popular Groovy language, Griffon is attracting a lot of interest. As is the Galileo RIA framework, the million records test-passing Pivot Toolkit, or look at the the game focussed PulpCore, and the ambitious Sage application rendering engine, described here.
Such diversity benefits greatly by making the Java Runtime it lives on more lightweight, and to support multiple languages Java really well: both by supporting them all explicitly in the applet model, and making them all run great on the JVM.
Making for a healthy space for more new ideas.

OK, let's cut to the chase, and all of this sweet nothings about java, and JavaFX :) Can you tell us already when is this JavaFX 1.0 gonna finally come out? I thought it was going to be the end of this month. I have a big project waiting for 1.0 to get started, and I am starting to get a little antsy.

i second that..
i also have an e-learning project which i really like to try javafx on it.
in the mean time we are getting old.. still waiting to see final release of javafx..
do you guys ever think about entering some updated news on javafx.com? .. release/roadmap schedules would be very nice for us

Hi, Danny.
It would also be very interesting to have an idea of when the Java SE 7 is going to be released. The latest announcement was that it would be released in mid-2009, but taking into account the beta and RC times, maybe it won't be possible. The JSR for language changes and for the Java 7 release itself haven't been yet created and I haven't seen any comment or announcement about them.
I know the hard work that Java 6u10 and JavaFX needs, so it is perfectly reasonable to have a delay, but there is no information about it. I think a public update on the Java 7 schedule would be very good for everybody.

I know...I'm getting older too. I can't give an actual date: but the team has already locked down all the last API changes and we're all bashing on what could be the release candidate.
@Xavi We're hoping for end of 2009. Stay tuned to the Planetarium over the next week for a more in depth update on JDK 7.

So asking for a supposedly cross platform technology to work on Linux is zealotry? Guess you gotta give me your definition of cross-platform.

The very fact that there are so many of us asking for Linux version shows that there is a good demand and Sun can get more acceptance. Being a Java developer myself, I'd love to use JavaFX for my RIAs. But alas I can't even develop them. :(

JavaFX 1.0 has not yet been released. What's been released is an Early Preview. This Early Preview is not available for Linux, that's right, but AFAIK the 1.0 Release will support Linux.
