私の担当分野というわけではないのですが、 社内担当者(そのうちブログ・デビュー予定)より 掲載リクエストがありましたので、転載掲載します。

本日、明日と、日本ケイデンス・デザイン・システムズ社の "DA SHOW 2005" が、例年通り明治記念館で開催されています。 Sun も「協賛会社」として片隅ですが出展していますので、 是非お立ち寄り下さい。半導体設計は Sun の原点の一つ、で Sun で CPU を設計している連中は、「自分が使う CPU として どんなものが欲しいか」を念頭に置いてデザインしている傾向 があって、ずっと相性のよい分野でした。最近は、AMD64 も 随分使われるようになりましたが、今でも「早くて、メモリが 沢山積めて、安い SPARC を持ってこい」という声を頂きます。 SPARC のお話もさせて頂きますので、DA SHOW 2005 においで の節は、お立ち寄り下さい。

形式のナイトセミナーを開催することになりましたので、ご案内

OpenSolaris User Meetingと題して、OpenSolarisのインストール
方法などの解説を含む、6月に始まったばかりのOpenSolarisプロジ
ェクトの紹介をします。また、USサンでSolaris開発チームのエン
ジニアである太田さんをゲストに迎え、アメリカのサン社内の開発
現場を身近に感じられるようなQ&Aを企画しています。

In case you wonder what g11n stands for, it means globalization, which has 11 characters between 'g' and 'n'. And "ja" means Japanese language in ISO language code, while "jp" means Japan in ISO country code.

なお、g11nとはなんじゃろかい、と思われた方のために。 g11nはglobalizationの略で、gとnの間に省略されている文字が11個あると言う意味です。 "ja"はISOの言語コードで日本語を意味しています。他方、"jp"はISOの国別コードで日本を意味しています。

Japanese Mailing list for OpenSolaris

As Ienup reported on i18n-discuss mailing list, Japanese mailing list(g11n-ja-discuss) will be ready on the 3'rd week of the July (7/11 - 7/16) since most of Sun engineering at US are going to be taking July 4th Independence day holidays at the next week. Thanks for your patience for a month from the OpenSolaris Open Day.

By the way, I'll leave San Francisco now, and will arrive in Japan on Sunday. There will be the election for the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly on the same day. It seems I will not be back in my home town in time to the election closing, so I have already voted by absentee ballot on June 26th. This might be another "partitipation", I think.

Ienupがi18n-discussメーリングリストで報告していますが、 日本語のメーリングリスト(g11n-ja-discuss)は7月の第三週(7/11 - 7/16)に 始まる予定です。と言うのも、アメリカのサンのエンジニアは、 独立記念日前後のお休み期間中なのです。 OpenSolaris Open Dayから一ヶ月ということになってどうもすみません。

ところで、これからサン・フランシスコを発って、日本には日曜日に着きます。 都議会議員選挙が行われていますが、締めの時間までに帰り着きそうにないので、 6月26日に不在者投票済ませました。まあ、これもひとつの参加というものかなあ、と。

JavaOne 2005 bits and greats

In Tokyo, Nash Bridges is on the air by TV Tokyo every Monday through Thursday. I don't know how many times it's replayed, but seeing it, it seems there are often chasing and shooting on the road of San Francisco :-) But I've never seen such one, of course.

Back to JavaOne, I'd like to pick up several bits of things I noticed. First of all, some people were watching the general sessions outside of the hall, lying, but taking memo, too. As a Japanese, it is very strange and interesting scene, I think.


There were showcases of Java 10 years anniversary at the exhibition, and there were several Sun internal documents displayed since the First Person era. (Java was called Oak at that time, you know.) And I found my coleague's name in the left end corner of "Java Product Group" list. There described "Ishimura Naoyuki(?)". I don't know why the question mark here. He's been a Sun Employee for years, and he is now working closely with OpenOffice.org people in Japan. I asked about this list to Naoyuki, and he confirmed it seems the team members were in the development of Java 1.1. He was in charge of AWT internationalization.

I also wondered why there were arts of Java 10 anniversary. These kind of things are not popular in Japanese IT events, I think. But I enjoyed a lot. They were painting at the exhibition.

I think I have to mention not bits, but great appearances from Japan, of course, you've already known since they have already reported in many presses. The first one is XFY of Just System. I was lucky to talk about it with Hayase-san of Just System. He told me that Just System would like to build communities around XFY. My understanding is the message is synchronized with Sun's "Partitipation Age" vision.


And Blue-Ray Disc Player from Panasonic. It is great to see such embedded deployment in consumer electronics area. I am also interested in this in person, since I have a BD recorder.

東京では、毎週月曜日から木曜日までテレビ東京でナッシュ・ブリッジスを放映しています。 何度目の再放送かは知りませんが、見ていると、サンフランシスコではしょっちゅう カーチェイスや銃撃戦が行われているかのようです :-) とは言え、私はそう言うシーンを見たことがありません、当然ですが。

さて、JavaOneの話です。 気がついたちょっとしたことを挙げてみようかと思います。 まず、キーノートセッションを会場の外で見ている人たち、寝転がったりして、 でもメモを取ったりしている。(まじめな)日本人から見ると、けっこう奇妙な、おもしろい 光景ではないかと思います。


展示会場ではJava10周年記念の展示があったのですが、 そこではFirst Person時代からのサンの内部資料も公開されていました。 (ご存じでしょうが、Oakと呼ばれていた頃の時代は、First Personと言う サンの子会社で開発されていました) で、その中で、私の知っている名前を "Java Product Group"のリストの左下隅に発見しました。 "Ishimura Naoyuki(?)"と書いてあります。 何で疑問符がついているのか定かではありません。 石村さんは、長年、サンの社員ですし、今はOpenOffice.orgの日本の人たちとも いっしょに働いております。 このリストについて、石村さんに聞いたところ、これはJava 1.1の開発をしていた 頃のものだと言うことでした。AWTの国際化を担当していたそうです。

さてさて、このJava 10周年記念のアートは何なのでしょう。 こういうのも日本のIT関連イベントではあまり見たことがありません。 なかなかおもしろいと思いました。展示会場で絵を描いているんですから。


ちょっとしたものばかりでなく、日本からの凄いものに関しても触れておかねば ならないでしょう。既にいろいろ報道されているので皆さんご存じのことではありますが。 まずはジャストシステムのXFYです。 会場でジャストシステムの早瀬さんにお話を伺うことができましたが、 ジャストシステムではXFYのコミュニティをまず立ち上げたいと言われました。 これはサンが言っている「参加型の時代」と言うメッセージと同じ方向だなあと 思いました。


それと、パナソニックのBlue-Ray Discプレイヤーです。 家電分野でのこのような組込技術としての採用はうれしい話です。 個人的にも、BDレコーダーを持っているので、おもしろいと思いました。

Project Looking Glass on the road(June 29)

I was walking around the Argent Hotel in the evening of the 3rd day of JavaOne, and came across the strange kind of people who dressed in black shirts and had Dukulele. I followed them to the corner of Moscone Center.

They were playing Dukulele,portable keyboard and harmonica, and the set list was: Help(Beatles), Hey Jude(Beatles), Tsugaru Kaikyo Fuyugeshiki (Ishikawa Sayuri) and so on.
Of course, the members are famous Java hackers, Hideya Kawahara, Prof. Fujio Maruyama, Yuichi Sakuraba and so on(sorry, for cannot name them all).
I think we need to get more participants at JavaOne Tokyo, since it's "partitipation age". Hideya-san, are you ready ?

JavaOne三日目の夕方、アージェントホテルのあたりを歩いていたら、黒シャツに Dukuleleを持った人々に出くわしました。そして、モスコーニ・センターの角まで ついていきました。
そこでDukulele、鍵盤ハーモニカ、ハーモニカなどで演奏しました。演奏内容は ビートルズのヘルプ、ヘイ・ジュード、石川さゆりの津軽海峡冬景色などです。
メンバーは、川原英哉さん、丸山不二夫先生、さくらばゆういちさんら、高名な Javaハッカーの面々です。(名前あげられなかった方々ごめんなさい)
JavaOne東京では、なんといっても「参加型の時代」ですので、さらに参加者を 募ると良いかなあと思います。英哉さんもそう思いますよね、きっと。 (あまり集まりすぎるとやばいでしょうか?)

Roller bug of posting date

As I have already pointed out in internal mailing list, it seems the date shown under the "Edit Weblog" is set by the local time of the roller server, and the time is set by the local time by the settings of each user. For example, in a time it's July 1st at JST and still June 30 at PST, if a man using JST posts, it is posted as one day ago. So, current work around is that we need to check the date, and if it is one day before, we need to change it by hand (clicking the calendar icon shown right to the date).

社内のメーリングリストでも指摘しましたが、どうも "Edit Weblog"で設定される日付が、rollerサーバの日付になる みたいで、時間だけがユーザ設定になるみたいです。 つまり、JSTで7/1でも、PSTで動いているサーバの日付は6/30 であると言う時間帯には、JSTでポストすると一日前に投稿 したことになる。 よって、投稿前に日付をチェックして、自分で適切な日付に しなければなりません(日付の脇のカレンダーアイコンをクリック)。

Japan: FAQ at Akihabara Install Festa

I was asked at Akihabara Install Festa about Triple Boot configuration (Windows, Linux and Solaris).

Installing Solaris 10 overwrites MBR of your HDD, and usually Linux installers install grub in MBR, so the easiest way to install both Solaris and Linux on your Windows PC and make it triple bootable, is installing Solaris 10 first, and installing Linux later. If you did Linux first, then after installing Solaris, you have to re-install grub. After the grub-install, you have to add these lines in /boot/grub/menu.lst(this is on Linux partition, so you have to edit this on Linux).

When you specify the partition you have installed Solaris, the second parameter should be zero-origin. So if you installed it on /dev/hda3, (hd0,2) should be specified.
OpenSolaris deploys GRUB as its boot loader, so it may be easy to make triple boot environment when installing OpenSolaris after Linux installation.

秋葉原のInstall Festaの時に、Windows, Linux and Solarisの 三つを切り替えて使うにはどうすればよいかと聞かれました。

Solaris 10はハードディスクのMBR(Master Boot Record)を 上書きしますし、通常LinuxのインストーラーはgrubをMBRに 書き込むので、Windows PCにSolarisとLinuxをインストールする 一番簡単な方法は、Solaris 10を先にインストールして、その 後にLinuxを入れることです。 Linuxが先に入っている場合には、Solaris 10をインストール した後で、grubだけ再インストールしなければなりません。 grub-installの後、Linuxを起動し、Linuxパーティションにある /boot/grub/menu.lstに以下を追加します。

Solarisの入っているパーティションを指定する際に、二番目の 数値はゼロから数え始めるので、/deb/hda3の場合には(hd0,2) となります。
OpenSolarisではGRUBがブートローダになっているので、 Linuxインストール後にOpenSolarisをインストールして、 三つ切り替える設定はもっと簡単にできるでしょう。

I usually sleep well in airplane, but at this time, I did translate OpenSolaris: FAQ: Getting Started to Japanese. I wrote on printed papers, and today, I typed it into HTML. Its format is still broken.

JXTA Town Hall Meeting(June 26)

After the NetBeans Day session, I felt cold, so I returned to my hotel room and got a jacket, then went to Howard 500(San Francisco Office of Sun Microsystems). Jxta Town Hall Meeting was held here. I arrived around 7pm. It seems Sun engineers summarized Jxta development updates first. And after a break with drink and pizza, members of Jxta community started talking about their activities and deriverables. I could not remember whole presentations, but there were Collanos(collabolation on Jxta), Proximio (Social Networking Service from Greece), Daniel Brookshier(Author of "JXTA: Java P2P Programming"), JxtaNetMap, milowski.com and so on. Attendees were about 30, but it ended near 11pm. This was another hot and excited meeting.

As you see in this picture, we opened sparkling wines and did "Kanpai" in the end. And I heard other Sun guy said "Yeah, Jxta guys are drinking..." to his cellular phone, when I left the office.

NetBeans Dayのセッションの後、寒かったので、ホテルの部屋に上着を取りに 戻りました（よくあることですが、こっちの部屋は空調がんがんで寒いのです）。 そして、ハワード通り500のサン・マイクロシステムズのサン・フランシスコ・ オフィスへ向かいました。Jxta Town Hall Meetingが行われていました。7時 過ぎに着いたのですが、サンのエンジニアがJxta開発のアップデートを行って いるところでした。そしてドリンクとピザの休憩の後で、Jxtaコミュニティに よる活動報告が行われました。すべてを覚えていませんが、Collanosと言う Jxtaベースのコラボレーションツール、ProximioというJxtaベースのギリシャ の人が作ったソーシャル・ネットワーキング・サービス、Daniel Brookshier さんはJXTA: Java P2P Programmingの著者で、それ以外にもJxtaNetMapや milowski.comなどいろいろありました。参加者は30名程度でしたが、11時近く に終わるという、こちらも熱く盛り上がったミーティングでした
写真にあるように、最後にスパークリング・ワインを開けて乾杯しました。 オフィスを出るときに、他のサンの社員が「Jxtaの連中は酒飲んでるよ」と 携帯電話に向かって話しているのを聞きました。

NetBeans Day(June 26)

Install Festa in Akihabara ended, and the next day, I moved to San Francisco. There was another festa here :-)


Picture 1: San Francisco Festival, though I had to go to NetBeans Day, so I had no chance to see the parade. Just saw many heads of people :-)


Picture 2: NetBeans Day, another festa. It seems almost 500 people were there. I'm not sure exact number, but the enthusiastic atomosphere was so hot! I was so much impressed.

秋葉原のインストールフェスタが終わった翌日、サン・フランシスコに移動しました。 ここでも別のフェスタが行われていました :-)

Picture 1: サン・フランシスコのフェスティバル。とは言え、NetBeans Dayに 行かねばならなかったので、パレードを見ることはできませんでした。単に多くの 人々の頭だけ見えました :-)

Picture 2: NetBeans Day、これも別のお祭り騒ぎですね。約500人は集まっていた でしょうか、正確な数字は分かりませんが、熱狂的な雰囲気はほんとに熱い！ とても凄い熱気でした。

Japan: Solaris 10 Install Festa in Akihabara(June 25) follow up

Masuzuki-san and Ohsone-san have already reported details on the Solaris 10 Install Festa in Akihabara. I'd like to add some pictures and my impressions here.


Picture 1: The front area of Akihabara station has been changed a lot, it's not the old Akihabara I knew... and I don't understand what they are doing here, sorry.


Picture 2: Someone brought his Xeon-dual motherboard. He bought AC supply and HD drive somewhere near the venue, and just installed Solaris on the bare motherboard. This is the craziest system at the festa, I think. And this is Akihabara-style.

Picture 1: 秋葉原駅前もずいぶん変わったもので、私の知っている古い秋葉原とは違います・・・ で、この人たちが何をやっているのか分かりませんでした、すみません

Picture 2: Xeon-dualのマザーボードを持ち込んだ方が居ました。AC電源とハードディスクを 近所の店で購入して、Solarisをこのむき出しのマザーボードにインストールしました。 これが今回の中ではサイコーにクレージーなシステムでしょう。これが秋葉原ならではと 言うものです。
