Japan: Mozilla Japan

Mozilla Japan was founded on Aug. 19th. This is an affiliate organization of Mozilla Foundation. On the Mozilla session of NSUG Symposium, Satoko Takita will cover both technical phase of Mozilla project and Mozilla Japan related topics. I have been using Mozilla Firefox for a while, and it seems it is farely good to be the default browser for daily use.

Also add another browser related topic here. There is "Browse Happy" Campaign at The Web Standards Project. It recommends to swich your browser from IE to another choices, in terms of security. Details are on the Campaign site.

NPO Mozilla Japanが8月19日に設立されました。Mozilla Foundationの連携組織です。NSUGシンポジウムのMozillaのセッションでは、瀧田佐登子さんがMozillaプロジェクトの技術的な面に加え、Mozilla Japanに関しても話す予定です。Mozilla Firefoxをこのところ使っていますが、日頃使うデフォルトのブラウザとしてなかなかよいと思います。

ブラウザ関連の話題として、「Web標準化団体が「Internet Explorer放棄」を勧めるキャンペーン」と言う記事がありました。セキュリティの観点から、IE以外のブラウザに切り替えることを推奨すると言うことのようです。詳細は英語ですがキャンペーンのサイトに記述されています。

Japan: Japan Linux Association Seminar

As I wrote in "coLinux seminar", Japan Linux Association September Seminar will be held on Thursday, September 16th. The program consist of 3 sessions. "Devconf4 report" is reported by Masanori Goto, who is one of contributors of Debian. The latter two session are about Knoppix by Suzaki-san and about coLinux by Dan Aloni.

Japan: Friday Free Stuff!

But I don't think I do like MaryMary... does.For Sun Microsystems K.K. will move offices in Japan on this weekend, we have to reduce our belongings in our office. So I got a lot of Sun freebies like ballpoint pens, wallets, mug cups and so on. As I wrote before, we have NSUG Symposium on Friday September 3rd. So we'd like to offer these things to the people who comes to the symposium and leave until the party. Please register at the web site, and put "reading blog of T.Higuchi" into "5:Miscellaneous" field. Then you'll get NSUG membership price(1,000yen). But, of course, you'd better become a NSUG member.

Japan: coLinux seminar

Dan Aloni, the author of coLinux, will visit Japan in September. He will have several seminar sessions in Japan, and one of them, Japan Linux Association will host it on September 16th. Kuniyasu Suzaki-san, who is famous as the developer of Japanese localization of Knoppix, will also appear and talk about his recent development works on coLinux, too. Details will be out soon.

Japan: Java Desktop System session in NSUG Symposium

I wrote about GREE session in NSUG Symposium. This time, I'd like to describe another session titled as "From installation to management of Java Desktop System". Tatsuya Furuno-san had several sessions regarding Solaris system management in the past NSUG seminars. He has long experiments in Sun system operations, so he did nice presentations and the rating of the attendees were quite high. So I think this session is also very useful for Sun customers who consider Java Desktop System deployment.

Japan: English is tough though...

On August 10th, I met Dr. Ando of University of Tokyo. He works for the computer center of it. He has organized Japanized Apache Server Project in Japan. While talking about open source activities in Japan, I found we share the same views on it. Today, I'd like to summarize the first one, here.

Communications in English are important in localization activities of open source. And this is hard because most of Japanese developers tend to gather in Japanese mailing list only. But it sometimes result many localization patches just stack up in Japan local, and do not feed back to the mainstream developments. And it makes us develop another patches forever every time the new mainstream release appears. This is not good for neither Japanese nor the mainstream developments. So Dr. Ando said it is important to let most of developments derived from Japanese community to be directly merged to the mainstream of Apache project. While I have observed ja.OpenOffice.org activities, Maho Nakata-san, who has been a long-term FreeBSD contributor, insisted Japanese activities should be merged under OpenOffice.org directly. And OpenOffice.org project also awares there are many localization requirements in the world, so there are many native-lang projects established and run actively. So ja.OpenOffice.org started in the end of the year 2002. I recently found a few open source communities in Japan do the same thing. This is because of the lack of English communications. But it's not the problem of English capability, I think. It's the attitude to solve the problems we have. English is only a tool for it.

Also I'd like to introduce a new activity of Kazunari Hirano-san in ja.OpenOffice.org. He offered one-month basic English learning course to ja project members. This on-line workshop targets to increase active Japanese members on English-based mailing lists of OpenOffice.org, such as marketing, native-lang, and dev. I think this kind of activity is the first trial in open source project communities in Japan. I hope we'll get more active participants in OOo mainstream activities from Japan after the on-line workshop.

8月10日に、東大の電算機センターの安藤先生にお会いました。安藤先生はApacheユーザ会の中心人物です。日本のオープンソース活動に関して話をしていて、似たような考え方をしていることが分かりました。そこで、そのうちの一点について今日は書くことにします。

それは、英語でのコミュニケーションはオープンソースの日本語化の活動において重要であると言うことです。そして、日本人開発者の多くは日本語のメーリングリストだけに集まりがちなので、なかなか難しい話です。しかし、その結果、日本ローカルの日本語化のパッチが積み上がって、新しいバージョンが出るたびにパッチを作り直したりしなければならないというようなことが起きてしまいます。このようなことは、我々にとっても、また、本流（国外の開発の中心メンバー）にとっても、望ましいこととは言えません。日本で開発されたパッチがApacheの本流に直接統合されるようにすることが大切であると、安藤先生は言っていました。OpenOffice.orgのユーザ会での活動を見ていても、FreeBSDでの長年の開発経験を持っている中田真帆さんが、日本の活動はOpenOffice.orgの下に統合されるべきだと言い始めました。また、OpenOffice.org側でも、世界中に多くのローカライゼーション要求があることに気づいており、多くのnative-lang（各国語対応）プロジェクトが活発に活動しています。そういうわけで、2002年末くらいにはja.OpenOffice.orgとして日本語に関する活動がOpenOffice.orgの下でも始まったわけです。とは言え、このような考え方で活動しているオープンソースの活動は日本ではそれほど多くないようです。これは英語のコミュニケーション不足によるものですが、それは英語能力の問題と言うよりは、問題解決に臨む姿勢の問題ではないでしょうか。しょせん、英語はそのための道具なのですから。

また、ja.OpenOffice.orgの平野一成さんが最近始めた活動についても紹介しておきます。彼は、jaプロジェクト・メンバーに対して、一ヶ月の英語基礎講座をしています。このオンライン・ワークショップの目的は、marketingやnative-langやdevなどのOpenOffice.orgの英語ベースのメーリングリストで活躍する日本人メンバーを増やすと言うことにあります。日本のオープンソースのコミュニティの中で、このような試みはおそらく初のことではないかと思います。このオンライン・ワークショップ終了後に、OpenOffice.orgの世界的な活動の中心に日本人の参加者が増えると良いなあと思っています。

Japan: GREE.jp/Social Networking Service

I have joined "orkut" since this February, because I'm always interested in new, cool, leading-edge stuffs(like you, now reading here, I guess). And we have several communities regarding NSUG(Nihon Sun User Group), JLA(Japan Linux Association) and OpenOffice.org(several ones, but this is for i18n-internationalization).(These links are accessible by orkut members only, but I'd like to put them here for the purpose of recruiting orkut users to these communities.) But orkut does not provide Japanese localization on itself as of now, so there are many registered Japanese, but few active Japanese participants now. English is hard for Japanese, but not only for Japanese. It seems "English is tough stuff" for any English speakers. I found this poem yesterday on one of Sun's internal mailing lists. Good knowledge-base! Anyway, I still keep updating NSUG informations on orkut periodically, but Japanese local services are more popular in Japan now, such as GREE.jp, mixi.jp and so on.

So, here starts the main topic of today. One of the Japanese Social Networking Service(SNS) sites called "GREE.jp" has been written in Java. It's still in alpha phase, so one of the interesting points is that one can touch and feel how it is being developed day by day. On September 3rd, at the NSUG Symposium, Yoshikazu Tanaka, the author and the owner of "GREE.jp" will talk about his business plan and technical development style.

Not only in Japan, but also in US, there is no clear business model of SNS as of now. An observer says there needs some business models to connect these human networking to on-line retails. "GREE.jp" has "Recommendations" function which makes affiliation-links to Amazon.co.jp. "mixi.jp" also does the same thing. But it does not make much money to cover the service costs, as far as I observe.

So there are two points I am interested in this session. One is, from the technical point of view, how the "GREE.jp" has been developed by Java, and how it will grow. And the other is, from the business point of view, how the "GREE.jp" will establish its business model.

と言うわけで、ここからが本題です。そういう日本のソーシャル・ネットワーキング・サービス(SNS)サイトの一つ、"グリー"はJavaで記述されています。まだαバージョンと言うことですが、 そういう意味では、日々改良されていくのを体験できるのも面白い点でしょう。9月3日(金)に行われるNSUGシンポジウムで、運営者兼開発者の田中良和さんが『グリー』の企画意図と開発スタイルについて話します。

日本のみならず、USでも、SNSの明確なビジネスモデルは今のところ無いようです。ある人が、人的なネットワークとオンライン通販を繋いでいくようなビジネスモデルが必要なのでは、と言っていました。グリーには「おすすめ」機能があって、Amazon.co.jpのアフィリエイトになっています。ミクシィでも同様の機能を実装しています。とは言え、私が見る限り、このサービスにかかっているコストをカバーするほどの収益には結びついていないようです。

と言うわけで、このセッションには二つの点で関心があります。一つは、技術的な観点で、グリーのシステムをJavaでどのように構築し、今後進展させていくのかということです。そして、もう一点は、ビジネス的な観点で、グリーがどのようなビジネスモデルを成立させていくのかと言うことです。

Japan: ja.OpenOffice.org meeting

On August 11th, we gathered at a Korean Barbecue style restrant in Ginza, Tokyo. We discussed about what kind of things we'll do at the upcoming Open Source Conference 2004. Though we did drink a lot, we decided three items to do and owners.

Japan: Looking Glass: NSUG Symposium on September 3rd

The annual NSUG Symposium will be held in Septemer as usual. Usually we have one keynote from Sun, and in this year, we will have Hideya Kawahara, Mr. Looking Glass, as the keynote speaker of Sun.
Also he will appear at Open Source Conference 2004 on September 4th.
It is reportedly he will also be in LinuxWorld Expo/Beijing in the week of August 23rd.

OpenOffice.org Conference 2004

We, Open Desktop Consortium, had submitted our abstract for OpenOffice.org Conference 2004 on July 31st. I am not sure it will be on the program. Kazunari Hirano-san of Japanese language project also submitted, I heard. How far Berlin is ?

Japan: IPv6 deployment committee

On July 30th, IPv6 deployment committee meeting was held in IAJapan office. IPv6 deployment committee is a committee under IAJapan to focus on the promotion activities of IPv6 in Japan. In this year, there are several regional events related to IPv6 in Japan, for example, in Okayama prefecture in November. This comittee provides programing committee function for such events. IPv6 Technical summit will be held in conjunction with Apricot 2005 in Kyoto, February 2005. The core members of this committee will work as the programming committee, too. There will be Internet Week 2004 in early December in Yokohama. This committee helps several sessions regarding IPv6 in this event, too. There's terminology working group under this committee, which compiles IPv6 related Japanese terms, because there might be some variations in Japanese-translated IPv6 terms. The deliverable will be published on this working group page soon.

7月30日にIPv6ディプロイメント委員会が財団法人インターネット協会の事務局で開催されました。 IPv6ディプロイメント委員会は、財団法人インターネット協会の下で、日本におけるIPv6の普及活動を行っています。年内には、IPv6関連の地域イベントがあり、例えば11月に岡山で開催されます。この委員会では、このようなイベントに際して、セミナーのプログラム委員会として働きます。来年2月に京都で開催されるApricot 2005に同時開催と言うことで、IPv6 Technical summitが企画されており、この委員会の中心メンバーがプログラム委員会を構成します。12月始めに横浜で開催されるInternet Week 2004に際しても、IPv6関連のプログラム作成に協力しています。また、IPv6関連の訳語がまちまちであることもあるようなので、IPv6 Terminology ワーキンググループを設置して、IPv6関連用語集をとりまとめる作業を行っています。この成果は、そろそろこのワーキンググループのページで公開されるそうです。

Japan: PostgreSQL seminar for NSUG

On July 29th, NSUG held "Open Source Seminar on PostgreSQL". This seminar plan was started when I encountered Ishii-san and Hayashi-san of SRA and Sano-san of Open Technologies at the LinuxWorld Expo/Tokyo in early June.
SRA, one of the leading software integration companies in Japan, has provided professional services for PostgreSQL since 1999. They have ported it to Windows, and named it as PowerGress. Starting this, they have also productized several PostgreSQL-based packages as PowerGress series. They have also fed back these modifications to PostgreSQL development mainstream. SRA has supported Free Software Foundation since its starting. They understand the merit of Free Software and Open Source Software.
Open Technologies, founded by SRA spin-outs, has been focusing on integrating open systems for years. They told a case of integrating PostgreSQL on Solaris/SPARC. I think such combinations are important in open source business, which tends to insist that full open source integration is better than full proprietary one. From the open systems point of view, every possible combination of open source and proprietary software should be considered and the best combination for customer requirements should be selected as the final solutions.

7月29日に、NSUGで"オープンソース・セミナー - PostgreSQL"を開催しました。このセミナーの企画は、6月はじめのLinuxWorld Expo/Tokyoの会場で、SRAの石井さん、林さんと、オープンテクノロジーズの佐野さんに偶然会ったところから始まりました。
SRAは、日本では有数のソフトウェア・インテグレーションの会社ですが、1999年からPostgreSQLの商用サポートを行っています。また、PostgreSQLをWindows用にも移植し、PowerGresとして販売しています。そこから始まって、いろいろなPostgreSQLベースのパッケージをPowerGressシリーズとして製品化しています。また、開発成果はPostgreSQLの開発にフィードバックしています。SRAはFree Software Foundationをその始めの頃からサポートしていて、フリー・ソフトウェアやオープンソースの利点に関してはよく理解している日本企業です。
オープンテクノロジーズは、SRAをスピンアウトした人たちが創立した会社で、オープンシステムのインテグレーションを長年手がけています。Solaris/SPARC上でのPostgreSQLインテグレーション例に関しての話をしてもらいました。このような組み合わせはオープンソースのビジネスでは重要だと思います。と言うのも、オープンソース・ビジネスというと、上から下までオープンソースでインテグレーションをする話になりがちだからです。オープン・システムの観点から言えば、オープンソース製品とそうでない製品の組み合わせをいろいろ考えて、顧客の要求を満足させるベストの組み合わせをソリューションとして提供すべきだと思います。

Japan: Open Source Software Association of Japan meeting, July 26th

On July 26th, there was held general meeting of OSSAJ(Open Source Software Association of Japan), including fiscal and activity reports of the previous year, and plans for this year. There were also sessions regarding open source and business. There occured several discussions upon deploying open source into business market. And I found that some people still misunderstood that the commercial license is needed for open source software to be accepted in business use, which is not true. They just need professional supports other than commercial licenses. Of course, I pointed it out at that time, but such misunderstandings might be strong in business area, that's why open source marketing is important.
By the way, I was nominated as one of board members of OSSAJ, and accepted.

OSSAJ(オープンソースソフトウェア協会)の全体会が7月26日にありました。昨年度の収支報告や活動報告、今年度の活動計画などの話がありました。また、オープンソースとビジネスに関するセッションもありました。そこでオープンソースのビジネス利用に関する議論があり、オープンソース・ソフトウェアをビジネスで利用するためには商用ライセンスが必要であると言う誤った考えがあることに気が付きました。正確には、商用ライセンスではなく、商用サポートが必要なだけなのです。もちろん、その点を指摘しましたが、このような誤解はおそらくビジネス利用に際しては根強く存在しているのでしょう。だから、オープンソースのマーケティングが重要なのですね。
あと、私はOSSAJの理事に任命されました。
