On August 10th, I met Dr. Ando of University of Tokyo. He works for the computer center of it. He has organized Japanized Apache Server Project in Japan. While talking about open source activities in Japan, I found we share the same views on it. Today, I'd like to summarize the first one, here.Communications in English are important in localization activities of open source. And this is hard because most of Japanese developers tend to gather in Japanese mailing list only. But it sometimes result many localization patches just stack up in Japan local, and do not feed back to the mainstream developments. And it makes us develop another patches forever every time the new mainstream release appears. This is not good for neither Japanese nor the mainstream developments. So Dr. Ando said it is important to let most of developments derived from Japanese community to be directly merged to the mainstream of Apache project. While I have observed ja.OpenOffice.org activities, Maho Nakata-san, who has been a long-term FreeBSD contributor, insisted Japanese activities should be merged under OpenOffice.org directly. And OpenOffice.org project also awares there are many localization requirements in the world, so there are many native-lang projects established and run actively. So ja.OpenOffice.org started in the end of the year 2002. I recently found a few open source communities in Japan do the same thing. This is because of the lack of English communications. But it's not the problem of English capability, I think. It's the attitude to solve the problems we have. English is only a tool for it.
Also I'd like to introduce a new activity of Kazunari Hirano-san in ja.OpenOffice.org. He offered one-month basic English learning course to ja project members. This on-line workshop targets to increase active Japanese members on English-based mailing lists of OpenOffice.org, such as marketing, native-lang, and dev. I think this kind of activity is the first trial in open source project communities in Japan. I hope we'll get more active participants in OOo mainstream activities from Japan after the on-line workshop.

8月10日に、東大の電算機センターの安藤先生にお会いました。安藤先生はApacheユーザ会の中心人物です。日本のオープンソース活動に関して話をしていて、似たような考え方をしていることが分かりました。そこで、そのうちの一点について今日は書くことにします。
それは、英語でのコミュニケーションはオープンソースの日本語化の活動において重要であると言うことです。そして、日本人開発者の多くは日本語のメーリングリストだけに集まりがちなので、なかなか難しい話です。しかし、その結果、日本ローカルの日本語化のパッチが積み上がって、新しいバージョンが出るたびにパッチを作り直したりしなければならないというようなことが起きてしまいます。このようなことは、我々にとっても、また、本流（国外の開発の中心メンバー）にとっても、望ましいこととは言えません。日本で開発されたパッチがApacheの本流に直接統合されるようにすることが大切であると、安藤先生は言っていました。OpenOffice.orgのユーザ会での活動を見ていても、FreeBSDでの長年の開発経験を持っている中田真帆さんが、日本の活動はOpenOffice.orgの下に統合されるべきだと言い始めました。また、OpenOffice.org側でも、世界中に多くのローカライゼーション要求があることに気づいており、多くのnative-lang（各国語対応）プロジェクトが活発に活動しています。そういうわけで、2002年末くらいにはja.OpenOffice.orgとして日本語に関する活動がOpenOffice.orgの下でも始まったわけです。とは言え、このような考え方で活動しているオープンソースの活動は日本ではそれほど多くないようです。これは英語のコミュニケーション不足によるものですが、それは英語能力の問題と言うよりは、問題解決に臨む姿勢の問題ではないでしょうか。しょせん、英語はそのための道具なのですから。
また、ja.OpenOffice.orgの平野一成さんが最近始めた活動についても紹介しておきます。彼は、jaプロジェクト・メンバーに対して、一ヶ月の英語基礎講座をしています。このオンライン・ワークショップの目的は、marketingやnative-langやdevなどのOpenOffice.orgの英語ベースのメーリングリストで活躍する日本人メンバーを増やすと言うことにあります。日本のオープンソースのコミュニティの中で、このような試みはおそらく初のことではないかと思います。このオンライン・ワークショップ終了後に、OpenOffice.orgの世界的な活動の中心に日本人の参加者が増えると良いなあと思っています。
