Today, June 17th, "Open Printing project deliverable announcement conference" was held at Arcadia Ichigaya, Tokyo. This project is a part of Open Printing Working Group of Free Standards Group, and funded by IPA, a government agency of METI, Japan. The purpose of this project is that enabling more easier and superior printing environment for Linux systems. Of course the deliverables are provided as "open source", and Turbolinux has started shipping this in Turbolinux 10F. Epson, Canon and other printer vendors also plan to ship their printer drivers for this framework in this year.I've been playing a coordination role in this Open Printing Working Group, and supported this development project from outside, and I hope this becomes one of important steps of open source desktop deployments in Japan and world-wide.

And we will continue working on the standardization of printing framework in Open Printing Working Group of Free Standards Group regarding printing monitors, printing status channel monitors and job ticketting etc.

本日、6月17日、「オープンプリンティングプロジェクト成果発表会」がアルカディア市ヶ谷で開催されました。これは、Free Standards GroupのOpen Printingワーキンググループの活動の一部として、経済産業省の外郭団体であるIPAの公募案件として行われたものです。このプロジェクトの目的は、Linuxシステム上で、より簡単により優れたプリンティングシステムを提供すると言うもので、もちろん、この成果はオープンソースとして公開されます。既にTurbolinux 10Fに収録されており、エプソンやキヤノンその他のプリンタメーカー各社も対応ドライバを年内には発表していく予定です。
私はFree Stanrads Group Open Printingワーキンググループの調整役として、このプロジェクトを外から支援してきましたが、これが日本および世界的なオープンソースデスクトップ普及推進における大きな一歩となれば良いなあと思います。
