JavaOne 2005 bits and greats

In Tokyo, Nash Bridges is on the air by TV Tokyo every Monday through Thursday. I don't know how many times it's replayed, but seeing it, it seems there are often chasing and shooting on the road of San Francisco :-) But I've never seen such one, of course.

Back to JavaOne, I'd like to pick up several bits of things I noticed. First of all, some people were watching the general sessions outside of the hall, lying, but taking memo, too. As a Japanese, it is very strange and interesting scene, I think.


There were showcases of Java 10 years anniversary at the exhibition, and there were several Sun internal documents displayed since the First Person era. (Java was called Oak at that time, you know.) And I found my coleague's name in the left end corner of "Java Product Group" list. There described "Ishimura Naoyuki(?)". I don't know why the question mark here. He's been a Sun Employee for years, and he is now working closely with OpenOffice.org people in Japan. I asked about this list to Naoyuki, and he confirmed it seems the team members were in the development of Java 1.1. He was in charge of AWT internationalization.

I also wondered why there were arts of Java 10 anniversary. These kind of things are not popular in Japanese IT events, I think. But I enjoyed a lot. They were painting at the exhibition.

I think I have to mention not bits, but great appearances from Japan, of course, you've already known since they have already reported in many presses. The first one is XFY of Just System. I was lucky to talk about it with Hayase-san of Just System. He told me that Just System would like to build communities around XFY. My understanding is the message is synchronized with Sun's "Partitipation Age" vision.


And Blue-Ray Disc Player from Panasonic. It is great to see such embedded deployment in consumer electronics area. I am also interested in this in person, since I have a BD recorder.

東京では、毎週月曜日から木曜日までテレビ東京でナッシュ・ブリッジスを放映しています。 何度目の再放送かは知りませんが、見ていると、サンフランシスコではしょっちゅう カーチェイスや銃撃戦が行われているかのようです :-) とは言え、私はそう言うシーンを見たことがありません、当然ですが。

さて、JavaOneの話です。 気がついたちょっとしたことを挙げてみようかと思います。 まず、キーノートセッションを会場の外で見ている人たち、寝転がったりして、 でもメモを取ったりしている。(まじめな)日本人から見ると、けっこう奇妙な、おもしろい 光景ではないかと思います。


展示会場ではJava10周年記念の展示があったのですが、 そこではFirst Person時代からのサンの内部資料も公開されていました。 (ご存じでしょうが、Oakと呼ばれていた頃の時代は、First Personと言う サンの子会社で開発されていました) で、その中で、私の知っている名前を "Java Product Group"のリストの左下隅に発見しました。 "Ishimura Naoyuki(?)"と書いてあります。 何で疑問符がついているのか定かではありません。 石村さんは、長年、サンの社員ですし、今はOpenOffice.orgの日本の人たちとも いっしょに働いております。 このリストについて、石村さんに聞いたところ、これはJava 1.1の開発をしていた 頃のものだと言うことでした。AWTの国際化を担当していたそうです。

さてさて、このJava 10周年記念のアートは何なのでしょう。 こういうのも日本のIT関連イベントではあまり見たことがありません。 なかなかおもしろいと思いました。展示会場で絵を描いているんですから。


ちょっとしたものばかりでなく、日本からの凄いものに関しても触れておかねば ならないでしょう。既にいろいろ報道されているので皆さんご存じのことではありますが。 まずはジャストシステムのXFYです。 会場でジャストシステムの早瀬さんにお話を伺うことができましたが、 ジャストシステムではXFYのコミュニティをまず立ち上げたいと言われました。 これはサンが言っている「参加型の時代」と言うメッセージと同じ方向だなあと 思いました。


それと、パナソニックのBlue-Ray Discプレイヤーです。 家電分野でのこのような組込技術としての採用はうれしい話です。 個人的にも、BDレコーダーを持っているので、おもしろいと思いました。
