I recently had the opportunity to interview Vijay Sarathy & Yasmine Kahn about the upcoming xVM launch taking place on Wednesday, September 10th at Sun.

Check out the video - it includes the overview of what Sun's announcing with xVM, how Sun's virtualization offering compares to those of other vendors, and how to find more info.  By the way, if you're hoping to attend the launch, go to our launch page for more info - I hear there will be a live chat with our executives... customers, analysts, partners and employees are all invited to attend.

I'm proud to announce that Sun has recently launched the Service Science group at Sun, head up by Jon Greaves, CTO, Kevin Ellis, Director of Services Innovation, and Alok Rishi, Chief Technologist.

This team recently launched their new website and with a video that helps explain what Service Science is, why it's important (specifically to Sun's customers, academia, government and the tech industry), and how Sun is making a difference (with services such as autonomics, remote management and monitoring, eco services, predictive modeling & analysis... (the list goes on!)

We've received some really positive feedback on this video.  I highly recommend checking it out!

Thanks to a Sun alum, Carl Swarsding, we still have access to some classic old Sun videos... This was created for the launch of the SparcStation 1 in April of '89.  Is that Scott McNealy's REAL voice????

I knew that I could put Java in my car, in my cell phone, on my badge and on my 'puter.  But I didn't know someone can put it into supertankers or on my belt.     Why would anyone want it on my belt anyway?

Just a short conversation with CTO Joe Polastre about Java-powered devices at the JavaOne show.  Sentilla was one highlight of the show.   Cool stuff.  Go Stevie!

Did you know that Sun Ray's can save companies around $800/year per head? Check out this interview with Edward Moffat, a 20 year IT veteran in Canada who works with Sun's Desktop products group to learn more.

We talk about his podcast series, Mapledesk, and his own Sun Ray videos are helping customers better understand our technology... and helping Sun close deals. We also cover how Sun Ray's have been found to be hugely beneficial for hospitals, militaries and governments across the globe.

Edward has kindly accepted the offer to become our official "Foreign Correspondent" for This is Something... For more info on Edward's Mapledesk podcast, go to Moffatcafe.com or check out his sun blog.  Edward is one of the few people that can make technology videos interesting and does a great job telling the Sun Ray story.

How to install lightening and configure it with your Sun calendar.

Use these URLs to get the software.

  • From mozilla ... Mozilla for Thunderbird itself, and for the add-on pages try this for all T-bird add-ons (you might also try the google provider  plugin if you use Google calendars).
  • Try to download the lightening software directly from the mozilla site (0.8 is the latest) but this is the right WCAP version of the Lightening add-on software for 0.7 version. here.   You can also use the Sunbird standalone calendar to do the same outside of Thunderbird.
  • To work out your calendar name go to namefinder or try the URL that you use to login to calendar (eg. https://username@cal-name.sun.com)

Seeley interviews Sun Solution Architect, Rene Ugarte, on Identity Management Best Practices. We shot this following the filming of a corporate video on the topic of IDM Best Practices with Partner Technical Enablement Director, Sean O'Neill.

In this brief video Rene talks about some of the typical issues customers run into when taking on an identity implementation.  Due to the complexity of these engagements, it's critical that you have a solid team that brings their collective experience and strong ability to analyze and solve problems.  He talks about things like dealing with "dirty data," issues around knowledge transfer, and one of the best kept secrets to Sun's Identity Management offerings.

Stay tuned for a more high end version of this similar content... will go live in mid-May and reside on our Identity Management Professional Services & related pages.

Lastly, a special thank you to Rene & Sean O'Neill for making into Menlo Park for our earlier filming. And thank you to Mark Moretti for being a super cameraman for this shoot!

Potential blog-casters:

Seeley and I have been working on a 'unofficial news' videocast channel at  blogs.sun.com/thisissomething which we are launching today.

The idea came from the regular launch blogging briefings.  We thought, why not use videocasts to do this?  Then it became a 'channel...'

The first few entries are a bit rough as we work out the format - we don't have a lot  of spare time. It is intended however to have serious content presented a short bi/weekly 'news' update, plus some short interviews about the industry and subjects of interest to Sun, in a style similar to diggnation.com or rickygervais.com ... in other words entertaining, informal, to the point, a video blog.

If you have any ideas on news stories or interviewees, or you would like to contribute, please let us know!  And we would welcome any constructive comments from the Sun blogging community (or anyone else ...).

Regards

Jeremy & Seeley
