No VM Migration while entering Maintenance Mode

I had today a problem while I updated a VI Installation at the Customer. The funny thing is that my cousin called me a few hours later that he get the same problem. This is a known issue in Update 2.
If a Host which is working in a HA Cluster enter the Maintenance Mode the VM´s will not automatically migrated. Great VMware…

Check the release notes website here under the topic: “Virtual Machine Migrations Are Not Recommended When the ESX Server Host Is Entering the Maintenance or Standby Mode

Comments:

That really seems to apply ONLY if ..."if the VMware HA failover level would be violated after the host enters the requested mode."

I read it as that migrations will and can take place during maintenance as long as the VMware HA failover level will not be violated.

Ed is correct. VI is smart enough to know that you're going to violate your HA policy, you'll be required to do this manually. There's at least 1 additional dialog box that warns you of this every time you attempt to put a host into Maintenance.

So, yes, actually, thanks, VMware.
