Top Internet Sites
I found a new site Alexa.com which lists "the most popular sites on the web." I like looking to see what is popular in different countries. My favourite part of the world in South East Asia: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Hong Kong. Japan and India are other countries I am interested in.
The most popular type of sites:
* search: Baidu.com (Chinese search), Google, Google.com.hk, Google 日本, Yahoo!, yahoo.co.jp (Yahoo!カテゴリ), Microsoft's MSN, msn.co.jp
* social networks: mixi.jp, Friendster, Myspace.com, Geocites, Blogger, xanga.com, Flickr, YouTube, orkut.com
* adult: adultfinder.com, sexuploader.com, freesexyindians.com, sex141.com
* information sites: EBay, ebay.in (EBay India), thaisecondhand.com, amazon.com, imdb.com (movie database), Wikipedia, สนุก (sanook.com)
* news: தினமலர (dinamalar.com), indiatimes.com, discuss.com.hk (香港討論區)
* file exchange sites: sendspace.com, upload.com, rapidshare.com
* job sites: jobsdb.com, monsterindia.com, monster.com
Points:
* Top/large USA companies have subsiduary sites in other countries (Yahoo!, yahoo.co.jp).
* Each country has their own local information interest sites, eg. is the news sites.
* There are English in the other countries. Some countries, eg. Japan and Thailand, are dominated by the local laguage which is not English. If you want to have a presents in Japan, your site must be localized for Japanese to be a top site.
* In the Global listing, the most popular types of sites are search followed by social networks.
* Time Warner, formally AOL Time Warner, is not on the top sites I viewed. So much for their dream of merging traditional print with the Internet. I left them in 2001, now I work for Sun.com, which is even farther down the top site list than Time Warner. aol.com is #36 in the global rating, time.com is #886, and the company I work for, sun.com is #481.
