I just posted the announcement for the 10th Irish OpenSolaris User Group meeting, which will be on May 29th at 7pm in Trinity College Dublin.

Due to the large amount of interest we had last month, Fintan Ryan has very kindly offered to speak more about SMF - going into a little more depth than we did last time: thanks Fintan!

We'll also have the usual roundup of the month's OpenSolaris news, so you can find out all that's been going on since April.

Once more, we'll try to record the meeting so that folks who may not be able to attend the meeting in person can listen to the audio at their leisure. Let us know if you're finding the recordings useful - we've had 26 downloads of the audio from last month, which more than doubled our audience, so it sounds like there's interest out there?

Comments:

Too late for proposing topics for this month's session, but some random things I would be interested to hear about (if others are of course).

1) Comparing VxFS + Vertias Volume Manager vs ZFS:

Performance - where is one better then the other based on existing benchmarks ?

What are commonly used things Veritas provides that maybe ZFS doesn't ?

2) ZFS with Sun Cluster and AVS

Basically I came across this blog entries (http://milek.blogspot.com/2006/09/zfs-in-high-availability-environments.html http://blogs.sun.com/AVS/entry/a_reason_to_deploy_availability)
and this link
http://www.sun.com/emrkt/campaign_docs/expertexchange/knowledge/solaris_zfs_compat.html#21
And thought it may be interested to provide a complete scenario/usecase where all 3 technologies above would be used. Maybe some updates on Oracle support or on the following topic.

<< No, the ZFS filesystem is configured as a failover filesystem. Architectural discussions for a shared read/write ZFS is going on now, when that feature will be available is anyone's guess. # posted by zoram : 25 September, 2006 10:25 >>

Talking about AVS itself would presumably be interesting for those not aware this technology became available and is an OpenSolaris project on its own ------

The above are just some random topics. I don't work with any of the above configs on a daily basis, would just be interested to hear someone talking about those. Opinions / suggestions from people with real day-to-day experiences should probably have more weight.

And I won't be able to attend this month's session, but hopefully the next one.

Vlad.

Hi Vlad,

Sounds like an interesting talk - I know very little about Veritas myself though, so we'd need a hand on putting together such a talk from someone more versed in Veritas. In terms of performance, have you seen this comparison which was based on ZFS in it's initial S10 06/06 release - there's performance work ongoing.

Meant to say, I'm hopeful we'll have someone from Cluster to talk to us in August - perhaps he'll be able to cover both AVS as well as the work with ZFS & Cluster.

Hi Tim, Haven't seen that comparison below. Nice and interesting. And so seems to be Filebench too. Vlad.
