Woah, does this mean I'll be able to more easily backup stuff from my iMac to my Solaris file server ? ZFS send/receive between Solaris and Mac OS X ? That'd be wonderful. In return, if we could also get an iTunes port to Solaris, I'd be even happier - Steve ?

Update, after my walk home this evening
Of course, it's not just iTunes that I'd like to see ported to OpenSolaris. As an amateur photographer, I use Canon's Digital Photo Professional and Picture Code's Noise Ninja fairly often. These apps which process large images absolutely crawl on my little iMac at home, but would go a lot faster on my dual Opteron in the office running Solaris Express. Heck - there's a Grid on the network that's built for applications like this. With a bit of gui interaction and a little network traffic, my problems would be solved ("Converting these CRW files to TIFF, applying Noise Reduction and converting to JPG will take approx. 12 hours on this machine, would you like this job completed in 10 minutes on the Sun Grid for only $5 ? Click here for more details")

Anyone ? ... Anyone ? ... Bueller ? Anyone ? ...

These apps which process large images absolutely crawl on my little iMac at home Umm, that's what PowerMacs are for. Buy a Quad. Or wait for the Intel based replacement.

That's one way of solving the problem, but it's *definitely* not cost effective. My 2002 17" iMac is more than capable at doing everything else I need it to do, there's just that single task I'd like done more efficiently - I'd far rather hire out the job to an anonymous rack of servers that I don't have to own, maintain or have to listen to, keeping my study nice and quiet, and my bank manager happy...

A computer has a shelf life of 3 years before it is overtaken by the current generation. You got ~4 years out of your iMac. Time for an upgrade.

Aah, as much as I'd like to buy a new computer, I just can't justify it. It's not that my 4 yr old computer has turned into a pile of molten plastic and metal: it works just fine, and as I say, for most things, Moore's Law just doesn't apply to me at home. The only thing I need a faster computer for, is image processing - I'd much rather rent the computing power I need: use the network, rather than just the computer... (I can't afford a server room full of 200 dual-core opterons, but that rack would process my photos a hell of lot faster than a quad g5 would)

It is just a waste to run a dual core powermac when you are going to be using its potential so rarely. Sure it feels good to own your processing capacity but i'd much prefer to spend that money enjoying myself on holidays than sitting in the loft gloating over my shiny new powermac. as to *having* to buy a computer every three years...wat a load of bs, it's horses for courses and methinks that you've been stung my marketing. It would be great to see grid connectivity for things like final cut studio but somehow I doubt that a hardware company like apple will head in this direction.
