Election Musings from the Airport

I have an announcement to make to all those who haunt my cell phone with taped political spam - uh, messages. It's too late. I voted. Yep, blackened in all the little circles on my absentee ballot and sent it in. Now all that's left is to watch the polls anxiously to see which way the electorate is leaning. (BTW, a side benefit of living in California, which is not a swing state, is that the politicians are saving their money to pay for television ads elsewhere, so we've been spared those awful commercials. And I don't miss them one bit.)

We watched All the President's Men last night, and were taken back to the Nixon election and CREEP (Committee to Re-elect the President. I know - it sounds like like something from Get Smart, doesn't it?) I remember the whole Watergate drama and what a difference an activist press made. This 2008 election at least has shaken the cobwebs out of reporting, and made it fun to tune into news shows and political blogs.

In fact, if there wasn't so much at stake, this would be a very fun election to watch. The contest has people riled up like I haven't seen them in years. And the comedians? Having a field day! No matter how tired I am at night, I can hardly resist checking out Jon Stewart on The Daily Show or the latest from SNL's Tina Fey. For more serious journalists, there's been terrific writing on both sides of the equation, with a deeper look into issues than we've seen in recent years. The election is making for good conversation, good entertainment, and when over, a huge decider of what our future looks like. If it were a novel, I wouldn't be able to resist turning to the last page to see what happens.

I especially love the passion in my son's voice when he talks about the choices to be made in less than a month. The McCain/Obama race may be just what we needed to ignite an entire generation of voters to get their voices heard. And thank heavens for that. We need some fresh blood in here to shake things up a bit.

So there are a number of election topics I'd love to rant about, but my husband gently suggested that perhaps that might not be wise. So let me get it out here in a generic manner:

"I can't BELIEVE you're voting for Proposition (fill in the blank)!"
"Taxes? I'll tell you how I feel about taxes! How can we expect this country to run (with) (without) new taxes? What are you thinking??"

"You're voting for WHO??"

Election night is going to be a night to remember. It's more fun to watch if you've cast your ballot. So make sure you do!
