Grazie, grazie

One of the not-to-be-underestimated powers of the web is how you can find out what is happening wherever you are. Consider:

I am sitting in an internet cafe in Radda, a hamlet in the Chianti district of Tuscany. Last night, as we were enjoying a home cooked meal prepared by our friends, one of them mentioned that 500,000 people (a rather large exaggeration, as it turns out, although the actual number was still in the thousands) had been evacuated from Los Angeles and San Diego due to fires.

Our home is one short block from the Angeles National forest, and fires are a constant worry for us, so this definitely got our attention. After dinner (and an apertif or two), we persuaded our hostess to let us borrow her laptop. We were quickly able to find that our home did not appear in danger but as extra insurance, I fired off emails to my two Southern California colleagues, asking them for an update.

Presto! This morning I had emails from Suzanne Masterson and Rachel Canon, reassuring us with the latest news. And so I say, grazie, grazie... to our friends who brought us welcome news, and to the wildfires that spared our home this time around

Arrivederci, my friends! And now back to our holiday
