The Devil in Me

My head is buzzing, and not from a glass or two of good red wine.   More from reviewing drafts, coordinating schedules, offering ideas, avoiding missteps, working relationships.  Oh, and staying appropriate, always the hardest job for me.  I am the person, after all, who once explained Medical Spending Accounts by talking about Bambi, a "working girl" with a heart of gold and a bad case of STD, and how she covered her unexpected doctor bills with tax-free dollars.*  (And you thought that writing benefits copy was boring... ha!).

So figuring out when my witticisms will be appreciated or not is a challenge for me, especially during stressful times.  Like announcing the departure of a top executive who is going to the competition.  So many ways to be mischievous (which as I recall is my biggest leadership derailer)...

On a more serious note, this is difficult information to communicate.  You want to be respectful and appreciative of someone who did a very good job for your company.  But who is now going to be doing the same job for the competition.  So maybe you don't really want to go over the top on the glowing compliments.

The good news is that we had ready a great successor, who brings a truly terrific background, set of values and energy to the job.  Plus he's likable and enjoys collaboration.  A real win for us.

So I'm keeping my clever comments and mischievous ideas to myself.  For now.

*To those of you who are having heart attack, it was during my consulting days, when I was MUCH less mature than I am today (and that's a frightening thought!) and no, I never showed it to my client...didn't even charge for my time, as I recall.  But it was pretty darn funny, if I do say so myself!
