A Global, Virtual Weekly Column
I have some good
news and some bad news. First, the good news. I met with my
CEO this week and he came into the meeting a minute or so late, saying
that he had just finished reading my blog. OK! That's
good! Then he told me it was full of typos. Arghhh.
That's bad. So I went back and fixed them and improved the
blog's content. Which is good. And I was reminded that
writing after a couple of gin and tonics is probably not the best
idea. And I can't say if that's good or bad. It's simply an
observation.
From which I've clearly learned nothing. I'm about to take a few
days off and I'm sitting here with my celebration martini.
Clearly living dangerously.
I don't know if you had the chance to read the interview with Jonathan
that appeared in Business
Blog Consulting. It resonated with me
for a couple reasons. First, of course, because he said, "My
number one job as a leader of a company is to communicate." And
what's my job? Oh, right - I head up Sun's global employee
communications and communities organization. Second, because he
talked about how blogging itself is not the issue - to quote him, the
term
itself may become "a little anachronistic." The point is to
communicate authentically and directly, without someone speaking for
you.
So all of this resonates with me because I increasingly think of my
blog - and many others - as the feature column in a virtual global
newspaper. Or as the editorials in a virtual global editorial
section. No one pays
us to write - our reward is in being heard and maybe influencing
opinion. We're read by choice, not because we happen to appear in
the opinion section and you've run out of other things to read while on
the plane. We don't have to be hired by anyone - except our
audience. And we earn that audience by being interesting (and not
having too many typos! oops...)
But this writer is taking a very small break. I leave this week
for Montana, where I'll get to spend a few days in
the most beautiful place in my universe. Flathead Lake a few
steps from our cabin, a view of the Mission Mountains to die for, poor
cell phone reception and no Internet connections. With my husband
and my dog. With my brother-in-law and his wife, who are very
dear
to me.
So this "weekly column" is taking a break. I'll talk to you all
very soon. For my U.S. friends, have a wonderful Memorial Day
weekend. And be sure to check this space because, as our governor says, I'll be back!
