Ubuntu Developer Summit

Next week I'll be in Mountain View participating in the Ubuntu Developer Summit along with several of my colleagues from Sun. This is all about work as it's an unconference, but it will be great to see people I haven't seen in a long time and meet developers I've only worked with on IRC.

Several years ago I needed to switch operating systems and I tried Debian based on the strength of recommendations for the apt-get software package management system. I was so impressed with how well Debian managed complex software dependencies that I've been using it ever since (and the bad old days are gone).

Earlier this year I had a chance to attend the Debian unconference and work closely with Debian and Ubuntu developers on the new DLJ license for Java. That was a lot of fun and it helped me understand the relationship between Debian and Ubuntu. Since that time I've also helped Ubuntu run well on Sun's SPARC servers.

So next week I hope to make progress on ideas that have been discussed for Debian Java Policy and begin to demonstrate the kinds of platforms and applications possible in the apt-get world now that the JDK foundation is ready. Check the wiki for updated details on all of Sun's projects at the summit.
