Grizzly Roars

I just learned today that the Grizzly project went live last week. This is the fast web container part of the GlassFish application server broken out as it's own project. Grizzly has been developed by Jean-François Arcand (jfarcand) of Application Server Engineering and Charlie Hunt of the Java Performance group (and NetBeans fame, charliebrown, a.k.a. huntch).



This Grizzly roars as my favorite example of how the Java HotSpot Virtual Machine and dynamic compilation outperform static compilation. Now I realize that making such a claim must be backed up by data. And we'll get it (I know we've got lots of results). What will be even more fun is when you can reproduce these results using open source performance tools. Part of the fun of working on OpenJDK is learning about all the cool tools and techniques that the community is using that I may never have even heard about.

In any case félicitations Jean-François and Charlie for sharing this awesome technology!

Je suis très content que Charlie partage avec moi son expertise pour trouver les «race conditions» dans le code multi-fil qui est aussi tordu que possible. Aussi, j'aimerais vraiment bien venir à Montréal offrir une bière à Jean-François (je lui en dois une depuis que je me suis gentiment moqué de son accent canadien lors d'un cocktail français organisé par Eric Mahé durant JavaOne l'année dernière). Je dois aussi une bière a mneptok qui m'a dépanné avec l'IRC lors du lancement de Java Libre, et puis le temps que j'arrive il faudrait bien célébrer l'arrivée du bébé de jbailey. Oh la la, toute ces bierres et si peut de temps!
