A Dieu Grandma

Today we will say our last goodbyes to my Grandma
who almost made it to 99 years old.

When I was growing up we often had a big Thanksgiving meal
at my Grandma's house... the kind of of dinners that seem
to last forever when you're a kid. In retrospect these
are some of my fondest memories of my Grandma.

I remember I wrote a story about those dinners.
And, from the "who would have thought?" department I actually
found that story right where those sorts of things should
be (in filing cabinet #3). During that era I did not
systematically date my works, but I'm fairly sure it
was written for my eighth grade composition class.

Here is that story (Teacher's comments omitted ;-)

Grandma is waiting for guests today. Her house is kept
clean and everything is in its place. "Come in sit down
make yourself at home." Sunday's paper is fumbled again
here. She has a smile with some blank thought. The
table is ready, the doily just so. There's turkey and
stuffing and jello and salad. There always were more rolls.
"Would you like some more, here."

I wandered into the den, the coach was welcome. Her
house is kept clean and everything is in its place.
The coo-coo clock is the same on the wall. "If you would
like to watch TV, the TV Guide is in there somewhere."
She has a smile with some blank thought. Why does she
always talk about her other grandchildren. I don't care
how much better they are. There always were more rolls.
"Come now it's time for lunch, have some pie."

Dressed up and uncomfortable I'm in a soap opera.
Her house is kept clean and everything is in its place.
I wish I could be home. Dad "it's time to go, it's
getting late." She speaks nicely with some blank thought.
"It was nice of you to come. Daniel writes me every week."
"Here take some rolls with you." On the way home I can
relax and sleep.
