Friends at work

This week many people from Sun are at OSCON and I thought it was a good occasion to start a moblog. It's amazingly easy to take a snapshot, e-mail it to Flickr (with tags) and have Flickr automatically apply my chosen Creative Commons license to the photo and create a new blog entry for me!

So, in breaking with tradition, this blog entry won't have any pictures at all as they will all be over on Tom's Treo Moblog. Please bear with my misspellings and short captions as the Lillipution keyboard is really hard for entering lots of text.

Since many, many groups at Sun work virtually I found it interesting that Doc Searls mentioned that after the first three employees no additional people at Linux Journal shared the same area code! That's why getting together to finally to put a face to the name you've worked with virtually is so great... And, of course, face-to-face interaction is much richer than simply talking over the phone. And voice conversations are much better than e-mail which, as everyone knows, is a great medium for some things, but is notorious for allowing miscommunications to take on a life of their own.

So seeing our team here -- and meeting many people I've always wanted to meet from the Open Source world -- has been a lot of fun to add a human dimension to all the discussions we've had (and are having) about what the future may hold...
