Java: Hot and Spicy for GNU/Linux Today is such a huge day... It's the culmination of months of work on relicensing Java for Linux and OpenSolaris distributions. I've been quiet for a long time as this has literally consumed every waking moment for the past several weeks. I look foward to blogging soon about my keen interest on the intersection of Law and Technology. In the meantime allow me to quickly thank Jeroen van Wolffelaar (Debian), Barry Hawkins (Debian), Matthias Klose (Ubuntu), Jürgen Kreileder (Blackdown), and David Herron (Sun) for an awesome and intense feat of community collaboration... Thank you Sun! This is a greatly welcomed move. It will help get Java everywhere.
Mono .Net applications have been making inroads within the Gnome community (Beagle, F-Spot, and Tomboy). Having Sun's high-quality JVM implemenation included on all Gnome-based distributions could lead to viable market for Java based apps on the desktop.
I understand you needing to keep this quiet leading up to the Java One annoucement, but I hope you will now reach out to the JPackage community. They have been leaders in developing policies for sanely packaging java apps for a LSB environment. I'm at least glad that Sun is adopting several JPackage guidelines, as your FAQ indicates.
