Solaris Express 11/04 is coming

The decision has just been made (inside the last hour). Solaris Express 11/04 will be build 72 and should be available on or around November 30.

The big thing for this one is...

64 bit Solaris on AMD.

Other enhancements include...

 • Webmin
 • Intelligent Platform Management Interface - implementing IPMI. IPMI is an x86 industry standard for remote sensing and lights out hardware management.
 • The new login screen and logo (had to get that in)
 • Apache Version 2

There are also enhancments to...

 • Dtrace (which I'm sure that Adam will discuss)
 • System V IPC and Other Resource Controls
 • New and updated drivers (e.g. support for the S2io Xframe 10gb ethernet adapter)

As usual, the documentation will be available for free at docs.sun.com.

I found that some of the changes meant that I had to address a problem in the bcf driver in order to get my network working (and nort panicing the notebook. I'm communicating these back to Murayama-san.

There's more in here than what I have listed, these are just the initial highlights. I'm sure that others will make their own highlights lists shortly (I may even add some more myself later).

Enjoy Folks.

Comments:

In regards to the drivers; is it possible in future to get a listing of all the drivers that are included with Solaris x86, and what devices each driver supports? The current HCL is completely out of wack in regards to what is actually supported vs. what is supported on the list; on the Solaris x86 mailing list there is a number of motherboards, for example, that are supported, and yet, don't appear on the HCL thus giving the impression to the public that the amount of hardware supported is few and far between.

Hi, What? No word of ZFS/Janus? Anyway, gonna download it when it comes out, and give it another shot (had problems with last build, x server didn't seem to like my gfx-card). bye, victor

Excellent news. I was a bit disappointed to still see Apache 1.3 in b69. Any idea what Sun's support stance is on general use of the included Apache and Tomcat binaries?

Hi Alan,

Thanks for your comments re Solaris Express and clarifying some of the Open Source points. Like many others, I'd love to play with zones+ZFS, quite apart from the addition of DTRACE and SMF).

I am concerned about Solaris 10 replacement of SunScreen with IP Filter. While I understand and (more-or-less) accept the decision, I'm not sure it's well executed.

Firstly the ability to filter Sun RPC+NFSv3 traffic is lost, rather ironic!?
Perhaps Sun has an opportunity to assist development of IP Filter RPC support?

Going with IP Filter 3.x rather than 4.x is also disappointing: 4.x adds useful features such as

 • Solaris IPMP support, and
 • multiple "head" rules to enter a "rule group"
(though I don't know if either version plays nicely with VLAN tagging).

Hmm, SunScreen already had heaps of stateful packet filter modules...could they be open sourced?

How do we get more attention to decent stateful filtering?
(perhaps via Ravi Iyer or Martin Hack, if they're around?)

Rgds, Stuart.
