Solaris 9 containers available too

I don't get it. Our apps worked without a hitch when we moved them from Solaris 9 to 10. What is it that could hinder forward compatibility?

I'm pleased you were able to move forward easily, that is the usual experience. However, some of our customers have had issues with their applications, and we have had a number of requests to implement this. As an example - a poorly written script that checks for a specific uname -r value.

Is it really solaris 9 or just solaris 10 acting like 9?

It means you can ship an entire S9 server environment to run within a s10 server. It is BSD Jains on steroids - complete s9 server runtime sitting atop s10 libraries.
Before you bother, consider the costs of porting to other platforms rather than sticking to Sun. They are looking increasingly dead in the water.
The downside of open platforms is portability, and the market is going to gravitate to be best placed players. That does not include JAVA (sic) from here.
