Back from Vacation
I just got back from a 3 week vacation visiting museums and amusement parks in Oslo with the kids. We also visited Geiranger to attend a wedding, and what a wedding! It started with a wonderful ceremony at the church, before we went on a 3 hour boat trip on the fjords from the church all the way to Geiranger. It was really incredible to see De syv søstre, Friaren and all of the mountains from the deck. It was absolutely fantastic! Just look at the view from our hotel room!

My disks crashed!
Yesterday I found out the hard way that you are not 100% safe even if you have a mirror.. Both of my disks started to fail, so I wasn't able to boot the computer anymore. I am pretty sure that someone with more admin experience would be able to get the machine back up and running (I must admit that I haven't paid much attention to how grub etc works, so my knowledge about system startup is a bit outdated ;-)). Because I feel I have a big hole of knowledge here, I booted a live cd and imported the ZFS mirror. Luckily for me I had no problems on the filesystems where I had all of my work, so I was able to copy all of it out to another disk (I don't have more than 4 SATA connectors in my machine, so I had to disconnect the SSD cache and plug in an extra disk there). With all my work safe on another hard drive safe on my desk I decided to do the easy thing: just buy two new disks and reinstalled OpenSolaris on those. My original plan was to get two 650GB disks, but when I arrived at the store they didn't have them anymore. Luckily for me he gave me two 1TB disks for the same price, so now I've got plenty of space for ZFS snapshots :-)
Personally I just love ZFS. During the installation of OpenSolaris, I just opened a terminal and typed in:
jack@opensolaris> pfexec zpool attach -f rpool c7d0s0 c9d0s0
And my mirror was up and running :-) I have been upgrading the old machine for a long time, so I have a lot of old "zombies" laying around. Instead of restoring all of them, I decided to just restore my data (/home), and recreate all of the configuration.
Hopefully I'll be done with everything tonight :-) I'm just so glad that I didn't loose a single bit of my data :-)

Meeting friends in Riga
I'm spending this week in Riga to attend the Sun Database Group developers meeting, so I am a little behind on emails if you're awaiting an answer from me. I am really enjoying this event, because I get to meet all of my new colleagues that joined us from MySQL. It is really fun to just walk around talking to new people and learn about all the great stuff they are working on.
Unfortunately I missed out on my stepdaughters birthday, but at least I got to speak to her on the telephone between two of the meetings yesterday. Happy birthday, sorry I couldn't be there this year.

I'm back..
I am finally home after staying four weeks at my brothers place in California. First I attended the MySQL users conference in Santa Clara where I met parts of the Memcached community at the Hackathon. It was great to finally meet the people I have been exchanging emails with :-). It was also nice to meet my new co-workers from MySQL, so I hope we get a chance to hang out more in the future.
I don't get to see my brothers family that often due to the distance between Norway and California, so it was really nice to spend so much time with his wife and the kids. I felt that I got really good contact with the kids (at least the boys worshiped me for being better than my brother playing video games ;-))
I also attended the OpenSolaris summit in Santa Cruz while I was there, before I went back up to attend Community ONE and Java ONE. Java ONE was definitively the highlight of the trip, and it was fun to see my brother on stage during the keynotes. I was able to take a look "back stage" and that was a pretty impressing sight.
Being the brother of one of the Java Posse have both pros and cons. I was able to hang out with the Posse and meet a lot of interesting people, but they also pulled up a slide of me during their BOF :-S
Well, it is good to be back home with my family, but unfortunately I got sick on the trip back home :-(

Heat pump
This weekend I got help from my friend to install a heat pump in my house, and so far it has been a huge success! We got a relatively large room in the basement (~50m^2) where I got my home office, my guitars and the TV. I have just finished renovating this room (replaced the carpet floor with tiles and painted the walls), but it is usually very cold down there since no one remembers to light the fireplace before we want to watch TV.
With the heat pump mounted in the basement, it's been a pure pleasure coming home from work and go down in the basement to watch TV.

SunRay @ home
The fans and the disks in my desktop computer is driving my girlfriend crazy, so I decided to go ahead and try to configure my good old SunRay 1G I got. My desktop machine is an old 3GHz Intel P4 with 1,3GB of RAM with two 300GB disks spinning all the time (they are used in an ZFS mirror), so it sounds like an airplane just before takeoff...
My desktop is located in the basement and is connected to a wireless router upstairs with a D-Link DWL-G520. I also have a wired network adapter in the machine connected to a switch, so I just connected the SunRay to the switch and ran the software installer.
After running utconfig and utadm I got the login screen up on the SunRay!!! Now I just need to find a room in the basement where I can put my server :-)

One year @ Sun
I have just completed my first year working for Sun, and it's been a very interesting year for me. I am working on HADB (a clustered database), which is quite a change from the email systems I've been working on in the past so I have had a lot to learn. The project is filled with highly skilled people willing to explain the glory details of the internal workings of the database, making the transition a lot easier for me.
I hope the next years will be as interesting and great as this one :-)

Amazing powder-snow
Today I went snowboarding for the first time this year. This have been a really stressful year for me, so I have not found time earlier this winter to go snowboarding. It was snowing constantly the whole day, creating a lot of powder-snow making it a perfect day :-)

Seeking new opportunities
I just found out that a former co-worker (from my time working for Thales Norway), and a good friend of mine, Ketil Johnsen have decided to leave Thales and start to work for ARM creating 2D and 3D embedded graphics solutions.
I wish you the best of luck in your new position.
