On opening up Solaris (redux)

Well, we're finally starting our first public steps in the OpenSolaris project, with the release of the DTrace code today (along with more information about the overall project). Note that while we hope people will be interested in the code, we don't expect a community to form around a source drop. Think of this as our good faith deposit to show that we're serious, that we're not holding the "good stuff" back, that we're sincere in our plan to release the Solaris source code and build a community around it. There's information about the license as well. We'll be following up with more shortly. And if you are interested in details about the DTrace code, check out Bryan's blog.

I am from TAIWAN I'm a collge student. My majority is computer science. I am a freshman. I want to learn unix kernel. I find a book"Lion's Commentary on UNIX 6th Edition"in our college's library. please tell me how to learn UNIX kernel. Do you have any friend who is kernel developer in SUN ? could they give me a direction? THANKS you for tolerating my poor english

The Lions book is fun to look at, but the code is almost 30 years old now and has little resemblance to modern Unix implementations. The best book on Solaris kernel internals is "Solaris Internals: Core Kernel Architecture" by Jim Mauro and Richard McDougall. Another good resource (for Unix in general) is "Unix Internals: The New Frontier" by Uresh Vahalia, though it's getting a bit dated. Then there's the Linux books: I haven't read them all, but the Love book is pretty good.

That's the one (though I only have the first edition).

I believe the other open source developers will help, especially for hardware drivers on x86 platform. I am a linux engineer, but I'm looking forward to opensolaris. :-)
