Bug in Date if written in Hindi

Tuesday Aug 28, 2007

I am watching my last blog and got my eyes on the date. I have set the date to be in Hindi. Now see the last blog date:

रविवार जुलाई ०८, २००७

रविवार is not correct at all. Don't know why is this problem. But it should be

रिववार and I found this a generic mistake like:

शनिवार जून २३, २००७

Ah no, I want my native language to be correct :-).

I assume you are using Firefox. It is a deficiency in Firefox (Mozilla) not built with Pango support. The sequence of unicode letters used to make Ra-vi-vaa-r are correct above. If you use a different browser (like Internet Explorer), or copy paste that text into Gnome text editor or Evolution mail client on JDS, you will see the text rendered properly.

The problem is firefox (without Pango) does not do anything to combine the consonants and vowels into a single character, but instead just arranges it one after the other. So in 'vi' small 'i', is printed after 'v', as two separate characters. The correct way should have been to render it as single character 'vi'

Thanks Chandan for the information. That all seems to be correct.
