OpenOffice is now available in at least two Indian languages - Hindi and Tamil. Not sure if it is completely localized. But the effort must be certainly underway. This is great news!

I think I heard this before. Newspapers in India also carried this news today. Singapore Airlines seat-back terminals now have StarOffice 8. Copy the documents that you want to work on to your pen-drive, insert the drive into the USB port embedded in the seat armrests. Bingo - you have your mobile office there.

Check out the interesting links here. The first one has an actual picture of a seat-back terminal from a Singapore Airlines plane.

If you have flown Singapore Airlines, and excited to switch to StarOffice, click on the "Get It Now" link below.

My name is Vasanth Vaidyanathan, or "Vasanth" for short. I am a Program Manager in Sun's India Engineering Center, Bangalore. The name of my blog is "Blogsticism - The Eastern Connection". "Vasanth Vaidyanathan's Blog".

Usually, the eastern part of the world is associated with mystic practices. The east is often called the "mystic east". The world is enchanted by "mysticism". Similarly, blogs that enchant and blogs that provide a different and unconventional approach to defining things are better known using the approach "Blogsticism".

Did you just download Java ES? Do you have Java ES installation questions such as:

  1. Is there an installation tutorial or demo available?
  2. Is there a quick installation for evaluating Java ES software?
  3. Are there examples that I can use to plan my installation?
  4. Does it matter if other Java ES components are already on my host?
  5. How do I upgrade from another version of Java ES?
  6. How do I use a third-party web container?
  7. What is the product registry and why should I care about it?
  8. If I have made a mistake and want to erase everything and start over, what do I do?

Here is help! If you are stuck anywhere when installing Java ES, check out the list of installation FAQs here:

The network is the computer - this is Sun's proud vision. I continue to be amazed by this guiding spirit. Technology is directed at making human life simpler. It is aimed at making a human more powerful. He needs to have all the information that he needs to do his work. Computers enable this, but in a small way. The world is so huge that a single computer cannot hold all the information you need. You need a bigger computer. Just like you live in a society that you rely on continuously throughout your life, the information that you need is spread around the globe. Also, a single computer does not have enough computing power for you to conquer the world. Welcome....the network computer. Dumb terminals connected to a central server. These dumb terminals just need to be connected to a network. You just need one terminal - laptop, palmtop, mobile phone or PDA to harness and use the power of the network. Humans have transcended air, water, and land. No one can hold humans in one place, or let humans depend on their immediate neighbourhood. It does not matter where you really are. You just need to tap the enormous information that is all around you with just the click of a button. Sun's vision means all this to me, and much more.

Several blogs already on this topic, but this will serve as one more reminder...

T-shirts that some employees get to wear as part of volunteer week.

As part of Sun's volunteer week, I was part of the team that visited "Shambavi Old Age Home" near airport road (Bangalore). Some pictures here...

Entrance to old age home, a few inmates, and Sun volunteers at the start of the day.

Inmates and Sun volunteers share a joke

Goodies (special jute bags made for the inmates by spastic children) being distributed. Each jute bag distributed contained some essentials for every day use - hair oil, detergent, washing soaps etc.

Inmates at the dining table getting ready to have their lunch

A mini-concert was arranged. Everyone enjoyed the splendid performance. A section of the inmates in rapt attention as the concert was going on.

Check out this interesting video. If you have access to "Love of Calypso" program on CNN-IBN, I recommend you watch it everyday. Srikkanth and Waqar are the experts. Meha Bhardwaj runs the show. Gaurav Kalra is the sports expert from the channel.
