For years, Madiwala has been a sleepy little village in the outskirts of Bangalore. The big guys have now set foot.

A typical Indian vegetable market

Madiwala is a hub of activity for traders big and small. It is also a wholesale vegetable/fruit market and many vegetable shops in the city take their supplies from here. The main Madiwala market road itself is about 1 km long. The buzz of small traders and hawkers calling out vegetable names rings in your ears and is hard to miss. Did I miss cows taking a stroll on the road?

All that may be a thing of the past with cars lining up to get a parking slot in an upmarket shopping mall that has come up right at the end of the Madiwala market road. McDonald's has opened an outlet in the mall, and it is hard to miss the big "M" these days.

So much for development!
