Manjula's recent blog entry inspired me to think about this subject.

This week saw at least two name changes. One is of course, SUNW > JAVA that I completely endorse. The other name change is Bangalore > Bengaluru. Bangalore is of course the anglicized equivalent of Bengaluru. So, the name change for me is just the spelling. Bengaluru is how we have always called it in South Indian languages.

The change can however impact the image that comes to our mind when we think of Bangalore.

  • Bangalore - The young and vibrant IT capital of India
  • Bengaluru - The "pensioner's paradise" with tree-lined avenues that shuts shop at 7:30 PM everyday

Of course, these two parts of the city thrive together inspite of the name change.

(First picture is mine, but I picked the second picture off the net. So copyrights are acknowledged)

Btw, someone asked if "Bengaluru" is the capital of West Bengal, but the answer is "NO".

Comments:

Lovely entry! I loved the pictures too- very different pics of the same Bengaluru...

nice comparison too...
Reading such blogs is a great way to start a day- and I haven't even touched my morning paper yet..:-)
