How does one setup a statcounter for a blog? But first, what is the information you can hope to get if you create a statcounter account (www.statcounter.com) for your blog or website? You can get to know:

  • Number of hits
  • Unique visitors vs page load information
  • Returning visitors
  • Visitor length
  • Visitor country/ISP
  • Visitor landing page and leaving page
  • and much more...

All the information you need is presented to you clearly and sometimes graphically.

Now, follow these steps to set up a statcounter account for your blog.

  1. Create an account for yourself in www.statcounter.com.
  2. Log in, create a new project.
  3. Select the "Standard Statcounter Project" option and click Next.
  4. On the Project Settings page, enter the title of your project. Just use the title of your website or blog. Example: Vasanth Vaidyanathan's Blog.
  5. Provide the correct website URL. Example: http://blogs.sun.com/vasanth.
  6. Choose an appropriate category for your website or blog, such as "Computers and Internet".
  7. Choose your timezone.
  8. Leave the maximum visit length to the default of 30 mins.
  9. Leave the log size to maximum, which is 500.
  10. Click on the option to allow "anyone to view the stats".
  11. Now, your project will be created. You just need to configure and install code.
  12. Choose the counter option that you want. I recommend the statcounter button option (the last one).
  13. Choose the button style you want in the next page, and select the button "Add the Link".
  14. Click Next and select the "default install guide" option in the next page.
  15. Once you click Next, your statcounter code will be created.
  16. Just paste the code to your blog template or browser source page.
Once this is done, you can click on "View my stats" from your webpage or blog or login to your account to see the statistics. You will be surprised with the amount of information statcounter gives.
Comments:

You might want to consider GoStats which has fewer limits on your data and more reporting capabilty. GoStats is quite easy to install too.
