SUNW or JAVA - My take
The Sun stock symbol is changing to JAVA from SUNW today. The announcement was made a few days back, and this has kicked off a debate both inside and outside Sun. From Jonathan's blog, it is clear that Sun is making this change to capitalize on the Java brand. Many people around the world know JAVA better than SUNW. I fully endorse this move. Millions of applications around the world run on Java, and millions of people around the world recognize and acknowledge brand Java. Isn't it time Sun capitalized on that? A lot of people may not know Java is from Sun. But they recognize the Java logo, are interested in getting trained in Java and they know having Java on their resumes can land them in good jobs. Mobile phones and cool gadgets sport the Java logo or the "Java Powered" tag! I can only think of more and more reasons for changing the stock symbol to JAVA.
Yes, but Sun is not just Java. Sun's product portfolio is very wide and it includes software, hardware, and systems. Solaris is a big brand from Sun. SPARC is a big brand from Sun. But, as on date, Java tops them all as the number one brand from Sun. Once again, Sun is not changing company name or company logo. It is just the stock symbol. A lot of people readily recognize JAVA and want to put their money on it. Java has a lot of potential, and we need to make more money from Java. Java certifications are a rage in India.
So, I really look forward to this change. Let us go and embrace the change. It may be coincidental, but Sun stock has steadily grown a few cents in the last few days!
