Virtualization, Consolidation, Gre(en Re)volution VirtualOne

Tuesday Oct 28, 2008

For years Solaris x86 community has been complaining about the lack of a latest version of Adobe Reader® on Solaris™ x86. The latest version, 4.05, was released in 2000 and there have been no updates to it. Solaris for SPARC has a modern version, but not Solaris x86. Adobe plans to release a native Acrobat Reader 9 for Solaris x86 in 2009.

There have been various alternatives including Evince, PDFLaunch which work well with some caveats and user experiences.

  • Evince is a multiple document viewer from Gnome community
  • PDFLaunch is pdfviewer from, again, Gnome community
  • Using Transitive Reader as blogged by Dan A.
  • Using VirtualBox

VirtualBox makes life really easy. In its Seamless mode, a user can interact with native Solaris application as well as Windows/MacOS applications. Here is another  snapshot of Adobe Reader 8.1.2 running on Windows as Guest on Solaris x86

I had been using Evince or PDFLaunch for all these years. Now, that I have a better alternative in terms of VirtualBox, I do not need those other tools. Best of all, I get to use the latest and the greatest release from Adobe.
