Reflections
Forthcoming attractions
I am leaving for Sun tech days tonight. Should be there in time for it tomorrow.
I am not presenting anything
Would like to list out somethings that I am interested about in attending in the next 3 days.
Rich Green's address tomorrow morning should be definitely worth it.
Recent acquisition and Sun's focus towards the same should definitely get a mention.
There's a lot happening tomorrow about Java EE and Ruby that should catch attention.
On thursday David Axmark's address will have an importance.
ZFS JSF sessions are interesting on that day.
Also, AMD optimisation is something which I will definitely be attending.
But SUN SPOT session should be fun as well.
Friday morning, I cannot miss Ian Murdock for anything.
I have been very very interested to meet this person and hear him speak.
And then that day I will be in Netbeans day.
Return journey follows

Mercurial Basics
Open JDK moved to mercurial based repository system recently.
There is a lot of discussion going about it.
There are many open source projects that have recently migrated to Mercurial.
Sun sponsored projects are Open JDK, Open Solaris.
I made a small presentation for the basics of Mercurial that I shared across my team.
Here is the Presentation
Drop me a mail/comment if you use it.

Blog addition 1
I edited my blog template today.
To see the changes, look at the "My Blog Extras" section on the right hand side.
This is not originally present in the theme
The code for the same was as follows
<!-- Vikram start changes-->
<div class="navcol">
<div class="innernavcol">
<div class="about navsect">
<div class="navhead">
<h2>Get Java</h2>
</div>
<div class="navbody">
Content
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<!--Vikram End Changes-->
These changes are applicable on the Sun blogging site only.
And that is if you have based your custom template on the Sun Pacifico theme.

When I met Martin Fowler
Last Saturday on 09 Feb 2008.
I had been to attend Devcamp 2008 with one of my senior friends who personally knows many famous people.
With him, I had a good opportunity to meet Martin Fowler.
A very tall person he had a great down to earth attitude like all the greats.

Day 1 at FOSS
Today was the first day at FOSS.
Open Solaris Day.
Meagre crowds and Solaris ruled the day.
Glynn Foster's talk was the main attraction.

Working from Mumbai
I am in Sun's Mumbai office today. (I usually sit at Bangalore.)
This is very small office as compared to Bangalore office, but a very nice one.
It's the small about this that makes it a comfy office.
Whats good about here. Whats bad about here.
1. Everyone knows each other. Except me.
2. Everyone is fine with seating anywhere.This office has a flexi seating arrangement. I am ok with it, but I have to struggle to find a seat.
3. The house keeping guys prepare tea here. Not machine tea and you don't have to prepare it. I don't drink tea normally. But for me there's something else here.
And best of all I get to go home in the evening.

Open Solaris
I just installed Solaris Nevada build 66 Developer Express on a Hp Laptop.
What can I say - the installation is just as expected.Brilliant.
Some of the best points.
1. Intel PRO 3945 wireless Card support.(I wanted it desperately).
2. SATA harddisk detection.
3. Most drivers work correctly.
4. And Solaris - thats the best part.
Additional feel good points.
1. Battery indicator.
2. Better Sound quality feel than Vista(My personal opinion).
Additional tasks required.
1. Install OSS drivers for sound card detection.
2. No games are installed- I mean real good 3d games.
Go ahead try it yourself.

Would like to know if anyone had experiences otherwise.

Volunteer Activity
Last week was celebrated as Volunteer week in Sun Worldwide.
I too participated in one of the events. The point of eliciting this is just the background for me writing this.
Where I worked previously too, there were certain events that happened. However, the company was not so encouraging for employee participation. This is one thing that I have liked about Sun.
Figures for the worldwide participation would be out soon. This would be a milestone by itself. Last year around this time I was not around at Sun, but had a lot of data thrown at me.
This year as I gather from senior guys there was much wider participation at IEC compared to last year, so the figures would be much larger.
Great work Sun. Hope to continue this effort.
